Tech CEO “humble beginnings”

Anonymous
So I am reading Reich’s big tech book, and one passage talks about how the CEO of Amazon and Google come from humble beginnings

Bezos grandfather was head of a govt agency and owned a ranch he summered at. His stepfather was an engineer at Exxon

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeff_Bezos

Pichia’s father was an engineer at large British company and owned an electrical plant in India
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sundar_Pichai

Is this humble beginnings? My mom was a county clerk and my dad was an unemployed alcoholic, when I write my memoir do I say i rose from squalor?

One quip:

“Jeffrey Preston Jorgensen was born in Albuquerque, New Mexico, on January 12, 1964,[17] the son of Jacklyn (née Gise) and Theodore Jorgensen.[18] At the time of Jeffrey's birth, his mother was a 17-year-old high school student and his father was 19 years old.[19] Theodore Jorgensen had ancestry from Denmark and was born in Chicago to a family of Baptists.[20] After completing high school despite challenging conditions, Jacklyn attended night school while bringing Jeffrey along as a baby.[21] After his parents divorced, his mother married Cuban immigrant Miguel "Mike" Bezos in April 1968.[22] Shortly after the wedding, Mike adopted four-year-old Jeffrey, whose surname was then legally changed from Jorgensen to Bezos.”

Agreed his infant and toddler years were very poor, because his mom chose to not draw on her family’s resources. But he ended up going to a Montessori elementary school, summered at ranch as a teen, etc.

So two years of living in apartments is considered humble?

Not just business, lots of actors and such too.

Anyone who feels they live a few years paycheck to paycheck…..I get tired of claims of “Humble beginnings” that include things like: private schooling, small group lessons and tutoring (academic or sports), specialty camps, travel teams, college prep and savings for college. If your parents can pay for or get that for you -even via scholarship etc., - doesn’t seem to be hard scrabble.

It’s the narrative the person weaves for him/herself.

A single challenge in comparison to peers (e.g., apartment not house, in high COL area) or had to share room with siblings” or didn’t take trips becomes poor or humble beginnings.

I am trying to make sure my kids understand that even though we’re not flush with cash, they have loads of resources and their needs are met.

PP here. No not really.

The CEO of Vimeo was born in Flint, Michigan and lived there until she was in 9th grade. If she wanted to, with no context, she could say that she’s from there without mentioning that her father is a physician and that she went to an elite boarding school and Wharton.

No it’s not humble beginnings.

Everyone you see that makes it has some help. Everyone even black women in the Supreme Court who marries a wealthy and connected Brahmin. Her mother was a principal for a highly ranked high school in Miami known for sending children to Ivy Leagues. Palmetto High school has $4 million homes and considered the wealthiest area in Miami for public school.

I’m sick of people pretending. Oh I worked a summer job, the poor person I am.

I hope one day you realize the difference between having parents who are tech executives and a parent who’s a principal at a public high school in Florida.

No sorry. I’m literally from the city and have friends that went to both schools. One of the princesses of Sweden lives in Pinecrest area. It’s not a poor area AT ALL. Happy to post some links for reference. Carvalho for example who left for Los Angeles who was superintendent is making over $500k plus pension. Over $1 million living in a excellent building. I’m underestimating because I don’t care to look him up but I saw him at a fundraiser and he knew the entire town. Those connections are gold. So for not being tech he’s certainly doing well. A principal can make over $130k average especially as this school is a magnet and nationally ranked. As I said known for sending kids to great school. People fawn all over themselves for this school, same connections. Also having your father be a lawyer is also not “humble”. No doubt she’s smart but please. She wasn’t living in the inner city on food stamps. She was UMC.

Tech is great and all for please. Plenty of other jobs make the same.

A $1 million dollar pension is worth more than $4 million in the bank. It’s about the same $200,000 return. And again Univ of Miami lawyer as a dad. Tell me having a dad as a lawyer from Georgetown is humble.

https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.miamiherald.com/news/local/community/broward/article251158714.html. Currently school board makes $242k. Plus moms salary. Best connections in the city. Please!
