I have been to the Carolinas plenty (Hilton Head, Outer Banks, we love Ocean Isle / Sunset Beach) but it is HOT when we have vacation time in August.
Please recommend a nice beach town or rental area, north enough that there should be cooler weather than down south. (I realize one can ever predict a heat wave). I have a small family, so we need clean, safe beaches and a bonus would be a small town visit (dinner, coffee, shops). Would like to rent a condo or beach house for 1-2. TIA! |

Isn't that super crowded in the summer? |

| Ocean City, New Jersey is terrific for families. |
| Love Avalon. But you're way too late to get a beach rental this summer, don't you think? |

The NJ, DE and MD beaches aren’t “north” enough to be measurably cooler than the dc metro area. I hate July/August weather at those beaches: very hot. June is perfect.
The op probably would prefer MA or ME—or even Canada. Re: crowds - money fixes everything. Rent an Oceanside home in a private beach in Bethany/north Bethany, and the beach will be empty. Fenwick isn’t crowded because there’s essentially no parking in the neighborhoods. |
| For it to be noticeably cooler you probably need to go tonCape Cod or north of there. Locally, Fenwick is nice. Ocean City, MD is fun in small doses. We don’t go there often, but when we do kids have a blast and it’s nostalgic for me since I grew up going there in the summer. For OCMD, I would avoid summer weekends- to crowded and can be rowdy. |
| To be truly cooler, I would suggest Newport, RI; or Cape Cod areas such as Falmouth, MA. Ogunquit is a cute Maine town as well. |

I’m in NJ and don’t agree that our beaches would be appreciably cooler in August. June and even early July, definitely, but not August.
I’d go north like to Newport, Nantucket, Cape Cod, maybe even Maine depending on what you are looking for. |

How so? What's different about it? |
