My dd was accepted into her reach school, Rutgers University (ok DCUM I realize this isn’t a reach for most of you but hear me out) She is deciding between there and U of Delaware, a target where her stats fit perfectly. She really likes Rutgers because of large diverse campus and proximity to nyc. But the average gpa/sat scores posted are quite a bit above hers. Is there any reason to think there would be a big difference in these schools in terms of difficulty or work load? I don’t want my kid to be out of her league. Thx all.
PS it didn’t help when we visited UD (which I really liked) we overheard one parent say “all the Rutgers rejects go to UD.” Is this true? |
If Rutgers accepted her, it’s because they believe she can handle the level of difficulty that they offer. And that level of difficulty will vary depending on the major. Ultimately the success of any student depends on their ability to work hard. Bright kids can wash out because they’re not willing to put in the time while more average college students can excel because they make the commitment to succeed. Is your daughter a hard worker? Keep in mind that difficulty of admission is higher than it’s ever been. While Rutgers may be a reach for your daughter right now, it might have been a target for her just 3-5 years ago. The professors haven’t suddenly changed what they’re expecting if students because te SAT scores went up. They’re teaching the same way they always have. If Rutgers is where she feels she fits, I’d send her off and wouldn’t give it a second thought. There a really a lot of nice things about college life at Rutgers. The “neighborhoods” and the different undergraduate colleges give Rutgers its own unique personality. Best of luck to her. PS - The parent you overheard at Delaware is an idiot. |

There is nothing wrong with Delaware and if your DD feels in the end it’s a better fit then why not go there and enjoy it AND know and be proud that she got into Rutgers and has the power to make this decision and not have it made for her.
My DD in a similar position where she got into a reach school but many of her matches and safeties are actually better fits and she is leaning towards choosing one of them. She says “I’ll always be able to say that I got in to XX but turned it down.” |

UD grad here. There is a train station in Newark and you can catch the train to NYC from Newark.
When I went to UD there was a lot of students from top tier public schools in the Philly area and Philly privates. There are also a lot of kids from NJ. Very few students from lower Delaware (Sussex County) go to UD. Politically connected families in Delaware also send their kids to UD. We had a Bayard on my hall. I did not realize until years later that he was from an elite family. Joe Biden is a UD graduate. UD has some extremely challenging programs. Chem Eng is one and the nursing program is also very challenging. |

UD touted their honors program as a public Ivy when they were recruiting at my DE parochial HS
A lot of my friends went there and got good educations. I hung out there a lot on breaks. |

I love the advice. I loved the tour of UD. And suspected parent was an idiot. Thanks

| My friend's DD goes to UD and loves it! She was a straight A student in high school and had many options for college, but chose UD because it fit her best and she is extremely happy there. No regrets! |
| Looking for info on another school and stumbled upon this thread. I'm a UD grad from the 90's and if the outcome of me and my peers is a reflection, go UD! |
My husband is a ChemE Delaware grad and had a wonderful experience. He ended up at a top 3 medical school. His Delaware classmates are indistinguishable from all the highly successful people we now know in NW DC. He keeps up with about a dozen of them and we have seem them yearly for the past 20 years. |
| If your DC is interested in working in NYC metropolitan area, then I suggest Rutgers over UD. |
That's debatable. |
Debate away. |
| How hard does UD frat? |
Tons of kids at UDel from New York and New Jersey. Plenty of NYC Metro connections. |
| Both good options. I don’t believe your DD will be out of her league, I think she will sink or swim at either school depending on her work ethic. If she want more urban setting, do Rutgers. UD is a lovely place to go to college and a short train trip for city BUT definitely more rural than Rutgers. Way to go and do not sweat it! |
