our anc representative routinely ignores what his constituents want. he's a leftwing nut job who seems to think he knows better than everyone else. probably why he lost his reelection race.

Our ANC guy represents no one but himself. He does not give a whit about what his constituents think. It is the opposite of representative government.

Sounds like they should be easy for you to defeat them, as is your right in a representative democracy

PP here. Yep, he's gone. Lost his primary. He's a stereotypical ANC guy -- young, white, lefty, thinks he knows better than everyone else and can just impose his views on his constituents, despite the fact that he initially won election with maybe 150 votes (it is amazing how little support these people win office with). Now, his political career is probably over, and everyone is better for it.

This fits in well with all the rest of the fiction here. 150 votes in an ANC election is a landslide. And they don't have primaries.

Don't ANC represent around 2,000 people. Hard to see how winning the support of less than eight percent of your constituents is a landslide.

So lazy that you can't even Google this shit?: https://electionresults.dcboe.org/election_results/2018-General-Election

Note the margins in the contested ANC elections. Such concludes your civics lesson for today.

These results show that hardly anyone actively supports our elected officials. It's pathetic that people can win election with so little popular support.

There are multiple “nuisance” buildings in Van Ness. The #1 complaint is marijuana smoke between apartment units. Many families with kids live there. Yet ANC 3F was giddy with excitement at the opportunity to support a weed dispensary on CT Ave. It appeared they almost wanted to push out a small business owner to make it happen. It’s incredible. Who are these people?

Who did you vote for in the last ANC election?

No one. They are not my neighbors. No one on our block knows who they are. Everyone on our streets assumed the ANCs were reviewing curb cut applications and liquor license renewals. Not rewriting social policy.

So you don’t vote and don’t even know how local policy is made?

mic drop.

I think the problem is that most of our neighbors are from other places (like Venezuela) and assumed ANC Rep was slightly below student council President and dog catcher.

Cycling causes child poverty now? Just when we thought this thread couldn't possibly get any more batshit, you grace us and proceed to blow our minds. I, for one, am entertained. Please carry on.

The government has a limited amount of resources. Every dollar it spends on one thing is a dollar that it can't spend on another thing. We all know that white guys have more pull with the government than poor black children so here we are. Sucks. Public money should go to the neediest not to whoever has the most influence with the dumb asses who run our government.

DC just ran a budget surplus, which means it literally has more money than it knows what to do with. Despite what you may believe, urban amenities like bike lanes increase property values, attract high income earners, and help the city generate additional revenues for doing things like alleviate child poverty. If the city was forced to make a choice, I would agree with you, but it doesn't and so I don't. Building infrastructure that saves lives - even those who are slightly better off - is not a waste of public money. It'd be even better if it could be built in Ward 8, but Trayon don't want it so it can't.

DP. The DC CFO projects revenues to decline from FY22 to FY23. By law, all budget surpluses must go to affordable housing which is what happened to the surprise FY21 surplus, which the DC CFO attributed mainly to Federal emergency COVID relief funds and lower than expected outlays on salaries for positions that went infilled. Good job outing yourself as not knowing what you are talking about.

Do you do realize it was the local W3 ANCs who pushed this plan? ANCs voted in by W3 residents? You also need a civics lesson, apparently.

Use of the bike lanes will be minimal. I hate that they already got rid of the four lane down and up in the morning and afternoon. Traffic is already terrible and taking away another lane on each side will make it worse.

Bikers have rock creek park path. Use it.

And who voted for the ANC? The residents. If they don't like the plan, they should find some different elected officials. But the idea that the elected officials did something wrong or nefarious is wrong headed.

So when I come up the hill from Rock Creek Park, I would still have to use the same sidewalks or dangerous streets to get to the businesses I want to support. And you will still be bitter that I am on a bike blocking "your lane" to get there.

Drivers have 1,500 miles of roads in DC to drive but wanting a few feet of a massively wide street set aside to help cyclists' enjoy a safe commute - that is, one in which they don't die - makes cyclists entitled and will also apparently increase child poverty. There are some stone cold crazy and cruel people on this thread.

Put your bike route on Wisconsin, Reno or Mass avenue. They are less traveled that Connecticut. Bring back four lanes!

Reno has already been deemed too narrow, and on the Cleveland Park listserv, it is resoudingly unpopular.
Mass Ave doesn't have any businesses. The whole point here is to make it safer for people on bikes to access the commercial area. If you put a bike lane on Mass Ave, then I still need to bike a side street to get to the businesses on Connecticut Avenue.
Wisconsin Avenue bike lanes would be great, I would support that as well. But that isn't the proposal on the table now.

Four lanes are never coming back. That was a daily exercise in stupidity.

Basically what happened is the ancs are now mostly condo and apartment dwellers. The rich single family homeowners have mostly lost their seats. They are now lashing out since they are mostly car drivers, while the condo folk walk or bike.

The condo types outnumber the home types, even though the homes take 10x more land.
