"We don't really have housing options." Other cities have proactive land policies–DC needs them too.

I’m a progressive who lives in a majority black neighborhood in NE, I support upzoning and building way more multi-family housing in DC (and specifically in NE which is gentrifying quickly and I think seriously risks becoming a place exclusively for rich white people, like UNW). I don’t want to move to PG county because I like urban density and diversity.

If all the progressives you know live in majority white neighborhoods, the problem is that you don’t know enough people, and specifically enough people who aren’t exactly like you.

I'd love to see more diversity in my neighborhood. We could use some conservatives.

That's why DC's traffic is terrible - we've expanded OUT of DC. We just can't move out past Loudon and keep building more sprawl housing. Unless you want everyone who's not rich or old to have hateful, numbing commutes.

And the DC is filled with smart talented people, which makes other smart talented people want to move here. So the answer can't be "no more people in DC". Let's do what the Europeans do, adopting their best ideas. Before they beat us as America's economy sinks into the mud because we've destroyed our world-leading talent economy. (That's already happening in Silicon Valley and Seattle – because we have crappy land use policies, jobs are moving to Vancouver and other parts of Canada.)

The worst traffic in the region is on the highways, not the city. The American Legion Bridge, the Springfield Mixing Bowl, etc. By comparison, traffic inside the beltway is calm and relatively easy. During rush hour it’s only 25 minutes from downtown Bethesda to the White House. Even faster from Ballston.

You’re either an outright liar or have never tried to drive from downtown Bethesda to 17th and Pennsylvania Ave NW during rush hour. Because doing that in 25 is impossible. Not hard. Not tough. Not difficult. Impossible. As in dividing-by-zero, impossible.

I’ll bet you $1,000 that you can’t drive from Wisconsin and Old Georgetown to 1700 Pennsylvania Ave NW (or the reverse of this) in 25 minutes at 4:45pm.

A thousand bucks cash says you can’t do it.

Care to put some money on this?

You are a very stupid person.

Wisconsin -> Military -> Reno -> Cleveland -> Rock Creek Parkway -> Virginia Ave

I do it all the time.

If you are in western Bethesda, Clara Barton Parkway is a better option and takes the same amount of time.

I’m honestly curious to understand the mechanism by which this person thinks that building more luxury apartments and condos in whatever neighborhood in NE they live will maintain the neighborhood as majority Black. In fact, it would cause the opposite and accelerate gentrification.

Love to see a DC person try to challenge a Maryland driver about the fastest ways into the city. LOL.

Just to add, it’s rush hour right now and according to Google it would be 24 minutes and I bet I could shave a minute or two off that with some aggressive driving if I wanted to.

I ride a bike and I’m pretty sure I could get from downtown Bethesda to the White House in 25 minutes at rush hour, but only because I don’t have to get hung up at red lights and stop signs, and it’s mostly downhill that direction.

But in a car? No way.

B resident here, I certainly can get to WH in 25 minutes during rush hour. Not even hard. I have found that my drive downtown generally is faster during rush hour. Right now (710 pm Tuesday), drive to WH would take 28 minutes, and I have 3 route choices all with same time.

It’s funny to me that people have a hard time fathoming that driving is more convenient and faster than Metro. I don’t like to drive every day, but it’s clear that some folks need to get out more.
