The location is no doubt great, Pittsburgh is a great city minus the weather.

It's incoming class statistics is not comparable to UMCP. They are ranked the same in USNews along with U. Washington, but both U. Pitt and U. Washington are boosted by their medical schools (of which U. Washington's is among the best, while U. Pittsburgh's medical center is among the largest).

U. Maryland and U. Washington at the least are underanked by USNews. Ranked behind Ohio State and the University of Georgia, seriously? Even Florida State? The faculty and student quality paints a different picture.

Check your US News/World for Pitt's 2023 Medical School rankings -- #14 in research and #10 in primary care. And check out the residency director scores which place it in the top 10 nationally, ranked between JHU, Harvard and Stanford. I would say that Pitt is pretty darn good in medicine based on those facts along.

UW is tops also. UMD is very good as well, but Pitt has better rankings than UMD across the board.

Anonymous wrote:I don't understand the love for Pitt here. I'm a Pennsylvania native, and my parents used to use the prospect of Pitt as a threat: "If you don't find a way to get that A, you'll end up at Pitt" and "We can't afford to pay for the schools you want to attend, so if you don't pull off that scholarship, you'll end up at Pitt." My friends' parents said similar things.

And indeed, the kids who ended up at Pitt (my brothers included) were not stupid, but were not exactly academic powerhouses. It's a school for high average kids who don't want to or can't get the grades for a truly excellent school. Sure, it's improved a bit, but it isn't a great school by any means.

The parental threat in our area was, "You'll go to Pitt on the bus," meaning you have to live at home. It wasn't actually a dis on Pitt.

College Park is ugly—it’s a real shame that UMD is located there. And agree that Pitt and the surrounding neighborhood are great. But it would be odd to pass up UMD CS or engineering for Pitt. I’m surprised there are people on here advocating for that.

Pitt engineering has always been great and the CS folks have cross over with CMU.

Another stupid comment. Knowledge transfer by shared air breathing? Is there a stupid convention going on today?

Pitt is always in top 5 in the country for NIH funding. If your child is in the pre -med/med/research/ science track, Pitt takes the cake.
Anonymous
Pitt and CMU have an agreement that Pitt students can cross-enroll at CMU for certain classes.

Not at all. OP asked "which is better?" Several posters said (and I agree) - Pitt for medicine/premed and UMD for all else STEM. Then someone said Pitt was alright for medicine, but that UMD was very very good also.

Pitt is better than alright for medicine/premed. UMD is not bad, but in that area, Pitt comes out ahead.
Too much research and rankings over the years to support this.

Having a strong post college program doesn't mean anything in terms of undergrad. Most of Pitt's medical students are not from Pitt undergrad.

That' probably true. But the research dollars and opportunities, and all other pre-medy stuff, really shines at Pitt. Have you been there? If so, you will see why.

Quite plenty Pitt graduates proceed to graduate (PhD) programs or in med/research.

That's the way it works at most medical schools. Most only take a handful or so from their undergrad, unless it's like Michigan or a few others. Most med school clases are small - very small. But I guarantee that a pre-med student that does well coming out of Pitt will have good med school options. They do place into top MD and DO programs. Do the research.

Pitt is fifth in the number of awards for the year (2022) according to the annual report from the NIH. Johns Hopkins University topped the funding list with $824.5 million, and the University of California, San Francisco, had the most projects awarded at 1,489. Pitt was 4th in 2018 in the country.

Our child was accepted into the Scholars Program at UMD, the Honors College at Pitt. It was a no-brainer for her, she's happy as a clam in Pittsburgh. College Park was a little too close to home and had a few too many students from her HS in attendance.

I think both programs have increased in stature, and merit aid at Pitt makes the cost fairly close.
