Joke’s on you. The state has already said it’s a hold harmless year and school districts won’t lose any funding for attrition this year lololol your plan didn’t work.

And what about next years when they don’t come back?

Um yeah right. As soon as it’s 5 days again they’ll all come back. Give it up. Your attempts at a power play with no power are just petty.

Lots of chatter yesterday evening about getting an extra week of break and buying last minute tickets for Disney, Universal, etc. NOT THE POINT of this delay!

I’m an FCC parent who commented that. I am still processing this for sure and I say that as someone who really does want my MD kid back but I am questioning the timing. I think most of these rabid FCPS posters are forgetting that our 2 elementary schools did go back in person for all of 2 weeks before we took a pause at Thanksgiving but the numbers are so much worse now. I just don’t see the numbers being there for a January 12 return but hopefully before spring.

I’m really disappointed to hear that about people taking trips. We have been hunkering down and following the guidance including very limited Halloween and staying just our family of 4 for both holidays and 2 birthdays. I’d really like to get kids back in school and this is the sacrifice we are willing to make. This is just so frustrating.

It’s extremely frustrating and the timing is beyond awful. I can’t help but think Noonan is determined to stick with his timeline to bring ALL students back in January and place blame if he can’t. He’s using a select few groups to test out his metrics and mitigation at the worst possible time. I have not heard a huge amount of support for this but he’s forging ahead anyway. Why can’t anyone stop him?

He shouldn’t be in a position where he is allowed to “experiment” with metrics and mitigation levels. Teachers as test subjects? What a morale booster. What is scary is that you are actually round 2 of the test subjects. The custodial staff might be considered round 1 and look how they fared.

It would be great if there were some higher authority to keep such madness in check but I am afraid it is what they might call “turtles all the way UP.” I assume you have the same Public Health head honcho that FCPS does - Dr. Gloria? The one who couldn’t even control a TB outbreak properly in 2013? The one who compared a covid outbreak in a school building to a lead pipe problem in the White House at a recent FCPS school board meeting?

I guess you can pray to the very highest authority (unless you are atheist) that Noonan finds common sense or just a base level of humanity quickly. Wait a few months when teachers are (hopefully) vaccinated and/or classes can be held outdoors.

He is literally following CDC guidance. That's a pretty good 'higher authority". He's also following the governor's guidance. Again "higher authority." He also worked collaboratively with a group of teachers, who all signed the new guidance. I am super impressed by Dr. Noonan.

I guess you have NOT been following what has happened to the CDC under the Trump administration. All of its plans and messaging have been compromised by even “higher authorities” (turtles, I tell you, turtles). Look, I don’t dislike our Governor or Dr. Fauci, but they are wrong if they are asking unvaccinated teachers to return to the classroom. I was livid when Fauci came out with that “a mask is not necessary” message last winter. I don’t care that it was a ploy to save masks for doctors and nurses. As a public health official and epidemiologist, it was his duty to be honest with the public. If the citizens lose faith in public health agencies, you know what happens? Well, here we are.

I digress. Dr. Noonan’s job is to protect his own community, including those who work directly beneath him. He may be a decent individual, but he is terrible at his job if he can’t be a big boy and withstand pressure from loud dissenting voices and corporate overlords UNTIL TEACHERS AND STAFF ARE SAFELY VACCINATED.

Bull. Schools all over the country are in school safely. We should be too.

Seriously even the ones that were are remote now mostly through January. The ones that go back in the peak like us are rolling the dice.

Agree that trump and his goons are deplorable. But it’s not just the federal agencies and trumpers proclaiming that school can be safe. Look around the country and schools that are open elsewhere. Look at all the non-govt guidance coming out. Mitigation works.

There is only one consistency: lack of data. We do not routinely test teachers and students. Kids are asymtomatic spreaders and schools are claiming with mitigation you couldn’t have gotten it at school. This does not = proof it is safe.

That’s fair. But people are dying because the feds can’t do their job. Eventually, one of those people could be you or your sister or your mother or your kid. At the rate we are now, every month vaccinations lag, 100,000 people die. If can’t reimburse PCPs they can’t stay open to treat people. If we can’t get genomic sequencing up and running, we can’t track this new variant. If we can’t scale up rapid testing, we can’t keep you safe in school. If we can’t push out logistics to hospitals, they ration care.

It can be not your problem so screw it. But at the rate this is devolving, it will become your problem because you or someone you love will get COVID when they didn’t have to, will die because of inadequate care for COVID or some other emergency, will have cancer progress because you can’t get screened.

It does make me wonder what would have happened if we were fighting an actual war.

I think one issue is that there is such a wide spectrum as far as what people consider to be “safe”. Whether it be going to school, eating outside or inside at a restaurant, getting a haircut, going to the grocery store, traveling, etc. people look at each situation, consider the risks and arrive at an opinion and decision. Some won’t see going into school as safe until everyone is vaccinated and there are no cases. Some will become very concerned over just a few cases and others will be willing to accept more. “Safe” is difficult to define.

As far as bringing staff in before students arrive, there is something to be said for having everyone in without students if the plan holds for students to return. I have been teaching by choice from the classroom since we started this SY (FCPS) and if you haven’t been back in the building since the spring it does take some time to get reacclimated to being there. I think back to March and how I felt when I first went to the grocery store compared to now or the first time I was back in a restaurant. You realize it isn’t so bad and you get better accustomed to what it’s like. I’ve seen teachers come back into the building for short amounts of time since September and you can tell they are not nearly as comfortable as those who have been there for a while. Some seem uncomfortable even stopping to say “hello”. If by chance someone truly has been at home and has not really ventured at all since March it would be that much more difficult for them to go straight back with students.

well he said they worked collaboratively and reached consensus. And their names are on the documents as members of the task force. That puts him head and shoulders above any other superintendent for the area.

Please find any email or news release that states he reached consensus with the task force. I did not see that written and heard otherwise.

You know why they are not comfortable? Because community spread is at an all time high

Dude you’re a fed working at home. You reallllly do not need to be telling other people they should die for their jobs.

Were teachers told yesterday to report on the 4th? Or had they been told previously that was the date, and the recent email just confirmed that.

It would be extremely short notice if they were just notified yesterday.

You all realize this is about Falls Church City and not FCPS, right?

FCCPS teacher here. Previously, we were always allowed to teach from home when school virtual. Yesterday Noonan made an announcement that dates for students returning in person were being pushed back but staff were expected to report on the 4th and every day afterwards. This afternoon secondary staff were contacted and told this decision has been reevaluated and now they need to return in person on the 11th instead of the 4th.

16:34 again. I don’t have an issue teaching from the building 1.5 weeks before students return. Mandating all of us return 2.5 weeks before students was not necessary.

I’m a Fed who is working from home because schools aren’t open. It’s not exactly in my COVID best interest to push teachers to reopen. Your look at this on a micro level. I’m telling you what it looks like for those of us with a macro view. And it isn’t pretty. It suck for me too. Im scared I’m terrified about what happens if we need medical care and can’t get it. But the longer we wait, the scarier it gets. That’s just reality. And it’s like running up credit card debt. Eventually everyone pays a price.
