What qualifies as 'Old money'?

Anonymous
I have neither old money or new money. I only have trickling, disappearing, non-accumulating money.

18:01 - Exactly! That explains this area completely. PP is a just a little bitter. Sorry for him, but not me.

Old $ doesn't talk about $. Period. They don't wear the latest designer clothes. In fact---they have that worn, expensive old clothing. It's a uniform---go up to Rhode Island, Greenwich, Vineyard in the summer. It's a look you can't buy. The children don't have to work---they have gigantic trust funds...or as others mentioned the $ has dried up but they have the old mansions and the 'name' that gets them into the country clubs and the cottillions.

There is not a lot of old $ around here. There is some transplanted old $.

In general terms----'new $' is a negative term which is meant to be an insult. It is meant to mean 'gaudy', not socially proper, etc...Think marble columns and spewing faux Italian fountains in Potomac. The faux rock facades, etc..

I should modify to say---as another poster stated----just because you have new $ does NOT mean that you are crass or gaudy yourself. you can be hard-working, have good values and not be flashy and are 'new $' solely because you are the first generation to accumulate wealth. The term is really used to villify the flashy and classless.

New money tries to buy old money things like horses and second homes and boats. But old money doesn't buy anything.

It's acting as if you have parents vs. not acting as if you have parents.

School or college?
I remember that as well. Fortunately I have grown so old people realize it is quite stupid to ask me that

"New money" is not necessarily crass and without values. . ..

You new-money-person seems to think you are better than others.
You are better than the no-money person who has all those things in common, except the money, and you are better than the old-money-person who has all those values as well.

I am grateful now that I am not like you

Huh? What value did you see in the post that you did not agree with? And which value did the poster claim belonged exclusively to New Money? I don't see what you have to complain about in the post. I would seriously like to know in which ways you are not like the post above. Are you against health? Do you have an excessive love for logos? Clearly you are not into kindness, I can see. But what else?

PP, don't bother. I am happy for people who do well through long, hard work. The majority of people in this area just expect, expect, expect...then wonder why they are SO disappointed. They are so disappointed because they will NEVER be happy - money or not!

The key is, act like you have parents (good parents) - and the rest will follow. But if you act entitled, you will set yourself up to be sorely disappointed. See, it's not always about the next guy. Watch who you are rude to - I guarantee it will backfire.
