Ross in Dupont Circle has it playground open on the weekend.
This becomes a really busy and social park for families with younger kids. There have never been any problems with Trash ect. But I think this is partly due to the area being very small and used constantly over the weekend, there is no privacy for hanky panky. |
Ross is super small. Our school has a soccer field and two playgrounds. Dog owners use it like a dog park. |
Maybe DCPR could co-ordinate something for these locations, cleaning wise, the use of DCPS spaces does take the slack and the wear and tear of DCPR. Add some "no dog" signs? |
The custodians are also out there just about every day around 7:30 am cleaning up. They do an awesome job going above and beyond keeping it clean! |
Our school always has dog poop right under to please clean up after your dog signs. Signs do not work |
This is the main reason. My office overlooks a large school field. The gates have always had a chain on them but were kept unlocked. I went to work on the weekend and watched as a dog owner let his dog run around the field, poo twice, and never once did he pick up poo. I told the school security officer when I saw him and he said that that it's been a problem. A few days later they put a lock on the gates. The school also has a small kids play area on the other side of the school. It has rubber surface (not grass). So not something dog owners would use for dogs. That has remained unlocked. I'm a dog owner. I never thought to bring my dog to a school field. But if I did, I certainly wouldn't leave dog poo where kid's play. |
Perhaps is school parents had a key tp the lock and they locked up when the left then it would eliminate the dog issue. The PTA could ask if this system could have a trial run. |

Are there legal concerns?
Parents - if your kid gets stuck by a needle or falls in dog poop while using the playground/field during school, what your expectations be for the school? What about for a person not connected to the school but just using the grounds after hours and gets stuck by a needle? |
Many years ago, the principal of a charter on Capitol Hill gave a key to the playground to a few neighbors including the local ANC rep who lived across from the school. It worked out well for everyone. |
| We had good results having our ANC ask MPD to ticket walkers with dogs off leash and sweeping the park at dusk to kick people out. |
Until something happens and folks get sued ... |
Dogs are supposed to be on a leash at Lincoln Park, it has a children's playground but few are... the police are too busy to be rushing over there to ticket a dog walker who will be gone by the time the police get there

+1 reading through the comments, many school fields and playgrounds that were open to the public closed because of damage or other misuse. |
