I don't like Michael Stipe as a person, but REM's "Nightswimming" is pure brilliance. If there was ever a song that better captured the hope and freedom of youth contrasted with the disappointment and confinement of adulthood, I am unaware of it.

Have you only heard that one crash test dummies song? The album it's on is decent, and they wrote the songs and performed instruments. You might not like them, but they're a real band.
