I have a child in a private who receives county services through MCPS and just realized that public school is starting next week and haven't heard anything from MCPS on his services. I wonder if MCPS is going to start with the DCPS model.
If it does, I will let everyone know! |
| I most certainly hope not. MoCo archdiocese is known for having a very good / productive relationship with the public schools. My understanding is that the DC archdiocese is trying to get what you have, not bring you down to our level! |
| People, please contact me if you are also having direct therapy denied. OP. |
| Still wondering if others are impacted by this. |
| My understanding is that DCPS is now starting to provide limited services to some students. has anyone heard this? |
Yes, we are getting services. |
PP, may I ask since when and for which services? We haven't been contacted yet. Thanks. |
OT. |
OK, thanks. We're waiting for speech therapy. I hear that OT and PP are finally starting up, albeit not everywhere. |

You need to keep on this as this "coaching model" is being pushed down on pediatric therapists at certain centers in the district where the "teachers" are not even certified so that the idea of then also handing off specialized therapy to them is very ill suited. The "coaching model" can be very appropriate in working with parents in Early Intervention as they are the primary caretakers of the young child. And often therapists will see that parents treat therapy time as "sitter time." If therapies are being started up by direct professionals in DCPS, it is probably due to threat of lawsuits so you need to be very strong and proactive to get your child served certainly by the second semester. |
MoCo and DC and PG form a single diocese. |
|
It is the school division MOCO within the diocese area which is willing to provide services in the parochial schools. That in itself for some children might be a reason to live there. I wonder if families are more satisfied with the services they receive in that setting than others receive in the MOCO school public setting. It may be hard to judge as it is only related therapies of speech, pt and ot rather than academic modifications and supports. Some parochial schools are prepared to serve students with a certain level of learning disability. |
| MCPS does not give OT or PT on a service plan, it's only speech and/or resource. |
