My only consolation from not earning 3 times what I earn is that I get to work a relatively strict 40h workweek with typical fed vacation time, and can contribute to raising my children. I do realize that daycare does most of the raising, but I can't see a job where our HHI would pop over $300k and we'd still work simple 40 h workweeks.

If it makes you feel better, DH only sees the kids on the weekend. But I SAH so they're not completely missing out on parental interaction.

Yeah- that would depress the fuck out of me.

We make less than half - about $200K per year, but b/c we're both teachers, we see the kids after school and have them all summer long! We have our nanny do morning care b/c we both leave very early for work.

wouldn't trade that for the world

I'm not used to having a father who's not involved. We had a family business. So my father was always around - or we were at work with him. I wouldn't trade those memories for all of the money in the world.

It would depress the fuck out of me to make 200k.

enjoy never seeing your kids then.

Wrong. Keep telling yourself that. We make over 500k HHI, DH is single earner, and works an average of 3-4 days/week.

This is the reality for some high demand professionals.

Could he make 7 figures? Sure. But, the balance of life affords a richness money can't buy.

It would depress me to only earn 200K too. DH and I together make over 500K and we both have 9 to 5 jobs. So yes, we get to see our kids.

ok, gotta ask. What do you PPs do that pays that much that has such low hours? I'm used to Biglaw and I KNOW you don't work in Biglaw with those schedules.

I work 9 to 5 in an inhouse finance dept and make around $120K. DH is a physician in a lighter specialty (mostly 9 to 5) in private practice and earns around $400K. Enough time to juggle and come home and spend time with the kids

Young Physician with a very in demand niche.

5k - Mortgage with taxes, etc.
4k - Private school tuition for two children
1k - Student loan payment
1k - 2 car payments
1k - Groceries and other household items
1k - Utilities, including cable and phone
2k - Nanny
1k - Private therapy for various family members
1k - Yard work, home maintenance, housekeeping, dry cleaning etc.

This adds up to 17k. I'm sure I am forgetting things. After all people do buy clothing, get hair cuts, go on vacations, buy birthday presents, eat out, sign their kids up for activities, donate money to charities and places of worship, and try to save for college and retirement funds.

Why do you have car payments if you make 450k?

Why not? I'd consider getting 0% financing and put the cash to work in the markets. You could potentially get a 50% profit over the 5-year term of the loan. If we're talking about a $40k car, that means a cool $20k. Good luck getting a $40k loan from the bank at 0%.

How much of that "over 500K" do you earn? My DH earns $265K and I earn $220. It doesn't depress me to earn "only" $200K.

Lobbying can also pay well with low hours too. Lots of high-paid lobbyists in DC.
