That's like saying there's no use in raking when there are still some leaves on the trees.

But shoveling is much more important.

I'm pretty sure those people are SAHMs who actually don't go downtown to work or have never had to walk in the snow in a suit.

The concept of snow freezing over tonight because they didn't shovel during the process is one maybe they don't understand. This is why DC is totally unable to deal with a "dusting"

I am a working mom who went downtown with a suit this morning. I did not shovel because it was snowing hard when I left before 8am this morning. If I was a SAHM mom I could have shoveled some and wait for the snow to stop and prompt shovel more. but I had to go to work and will be at work all day, so I will shovel late this afternoon when i get home. When my office give us a two hours "shoveling delay" I will shovel in the morning

But sweetie, you (I assume) own a house? Not a business between the metro and a school? Are you not capable of understanding the difference between shoveling the driveway of your house and the sidewalk between the metro and a school building? Or the sidewalk next to the metro?

I'm sure you have the critical thinking skills to understand the difference between HOME and RETAIL. Right?

yes, thanks, I own a house, and have the critical thinking to understand that difference between home and retail. I am not sure about your reading comprehension though. none of the messages before mentioned businesses not shoveling (my experience, and what I saw this morning confirmed, is that businesses and condos usually are the ones that shovel early and well). a person mentioned walking downtown in a suit, and downtown there are many residential areas (Dupont Circle and West End just to mention areas close to K street, where I work). the truly business areas downtown (like K St.) are usually clean. even Jeff mentioned that he shoveled this morning his sidewalk and I doubt he was talking about a retail or business. so next time, before being so rude in a post, you should maybe read posts more carefully

Why don't both of you take your Word Salad Tournament of Champions elsewhere.

We can't have it so damn convenient all the damn time. We want a school but we don't want those at our school from the housing projects. We want walkable neighborhoods and neighborhood schools but we want them closed at one inch of snow. We want the best teachers and staff but don't want to give them a salary for them to afford to live in the neighborhood of which the school they work. We don't want to be compared to the surrounding jurisdictions when it comes to test scores and economics but let the snow the come and all suddent Topper Shutt should be the Chancellor. Sheesh.

What? Are you from Florida? Yes, you can absolutely shovel while it's snowing, and salt too. That makes it easier, lately.

We live in Shepherd Park--drove up 16th to work and noticed at the MD line that there was a clear demarcation between DC and MD, w/the DC side not plowed and the MD side plowed. Looks like MoCo was more on their game than DC this morning.

As an aside, sooo glad we decided to put our kid in our neighborhood school this year, two blocks away from our home. Otherwise she would've had to sit in the car for 1+ hour with me to get to her old daycare in Bethesda this am as we crawled along.

Agreed! Sucks for the teachers trying to get to school, but I for one was happy to send my snow bunnies off to school today!

There was ample warning that the snow would be locally heavy during rush hour. So if the decision was made to open schools at the usual time, the major arteries should have been salted and treated. Conn. Ave. was rough sledding in many places, U&Florida was unnavigable because of stuck buses and many side streets were jammed as cars couldn't get up hills. On the other hand, Macomb was nice and smooth since the WIS plow kept making up and down trips!

You're killing me. I know I have friends who voted for her, and I'm trying to keep myself from calling them up to scream "I TOLD YOU SO!"

Yeah, no. At a minimum, pay attention to a widely forecast snow storm that brought up to 4" of snow in some parts of the city and salt and plow major thruways. Delay the opening of school so that students can all arrive at the same time to begin their school day safely. Basic stuff, really.

Why is this? Why should DC be less competent than MoCo? At least in treating and plowing snow, DC was pretty good these last few years. I fear that Bowser signs a return to the sorry old DC days of poor service and poor accountability.

That's "Bowser signals a return...."

This is from a city press release yesterday:

"(Washington, DC) The District Snow Team’s (Department of Public Works and Department of Transportation) first full deployment of this snow season will be Tuesday, January 6 when about 200 snow plows will be on their commercial and residential routes by 5 am. Today, trucks are pre-treating streets, bridges and other elevated structures with a brine/beet juice mixture to help prevent Provides a proactive strategy to prevent freezing.

What the heck happened between then and this morning?

They probably couldn't get to work, because of the snow.

Instead of appearing on NBC's national Meet The Press like they did on Sunday, perhaps Muriel and Kaya should show up and meet their OWN local press here in DC! Time for a press conference for the people, we have many unanswered questions, from principal terminations to sending kids to school in terrible conditions.

Proves the earlier point that the only thing Bowser and her new administration evidently seem capable of shoveling is bullshit.

You'd think there would have been a couple of status conference calls overnight between the mayor, the chancellor, the police chief, and the (acting) heads of transportation and public works to ensure that everything was coordinated and that road conditions permitted the public schools to open on time. Apparently that didn't happen.
