OP here. I agree! I'm not looking to make an issue out of this at all, which is why I didn't want to push the issue with the teacher. I'm just trying to understand what it is that DD is NOT doing, that other kids are doing that shows they deserve an ES. Does that make sense? I feel like if she's getting a P, it means she's just 'good enough' at reading. But, other kids who get an ES are obviously doing something better, and I'm wondering what that is.

I say this kindly: Who gives a fuck what other 6 yr olds are doing???!!!

Do you guys tell your kids about the ES? My first grader does not know that ES exists. If it were up to me, I would not even disclose the grading system to him at this age. I want him to learn for the sake of learning not get caught up in the grading. Unfortunately, that didn't work because his teacher told the class about the grading system which surprised me a little. However, I told him P stands for "perfect" and never to worry about what other kids are getting. Hopefully we can keep that attitude going for a few more years before he gets caught up in the grading.

I haven't discussed this with my child and didn't plan to but she seems to know what an ES is anyway -either from her teacher of from her annoying friend who is perfect at everything. LOL
