Best way to get to know Jesus

Go to prison.

Lots of people find Jesus in prison.

NP. So, you're unabashedly trashing all religions. You seem uncomfortable with the fact that others think/believe differently. So instead of a value-neutral "belief/non-belief" framework you go with the "I'm right and it's all myth" framework. So mature.

There is nothing mature about believing in fairy tales. I am sorry.

Why do you bother responding in the religion forum when someone is asking how to be closer/get to know Jesus?

If there is such a thing as a sanctuary veil, you can bet archeologists have looked for it -- and not found it -- or it would be big news. They also looked for and didn't find any evidence that the red sea parted, no evidence for Jews being enslaved in Egypt, no signs of anyone living in the desert and lots of evidence of early jews being in Israel during that time, no Noah's ark, no mount Sinai (they just named a mountain that much later) Moses supposedly broke the rock the 10 commandments were written on (very convenient) and there were no signs of any walls around the city of Jericho.

These are stories.

I'm curious: do you think you've converted a single person to atheism (or islam, if you're Muslim Woman) with this approach?

A major problem with your approach (besides the off-putting aggression) is that you aren't the greatest historian. So people roll their eyes and move on.

For example, there is a whole lot of evidence that there was a huge flood around the Black Sea before Christ; yet nobody actually thinks a wooden ark would have survived to the present day, or more than a few hundred years. Similarly, a piece of fabric/temple veil will not have survived 2000 years, or even 1000 years. I'm also pretty sure you're wrong on the archeological evidence for the parts of historical Judaism you've cited, but maybe someone else wants to take that on.

You've set up some straw men here ("you haven't found a 2,000-year-old piece of fabric! So your religion must be false!") that just makes most readers roll their eyes and conclude you aren't too bright.

People don't "convert" others to atheism. It's not a religion.

And I really, really, doubt that Muslims are posting here. That's paranoia.

Pointing out inconsistencies and asking questions is the name of the game on a Religion Forum. That's what this is. It doesn't mean someone's a hater, not too bright, an atheist, a Muslim, or a troll. It means they are participating in a debate. Respond or just move on to the Gardening Forum.

OP asked a question, it's not a debate at all. You should go to a quiet place and find your own faith.

It's a discussion. People often have different points of view in a discussion, especially in an on-line discussion. Check out the rest of DCUM and you'll see many different points of view.

Religion is no different - in fact even within the same denomination there are many points of view -- countries have gone to war over them -- so it's not so odd that different viewpoints and believes should be expressed here. This is not church and it's not your church. It's a public internet forum.

Not at all a bad use of a convict's time there.

Given that one of the beatitudes was to visit the imprisoned, this is also a good way for those of us who are not criminals to be Christ's Body. I know several lay people who have made prison ministries the time portion of their "time, talent, and treasure" tithe. (They teach secular classes from basic literacy all the way up to undergrad philosophy. One friend taught a kind of hand-knitting because knitting needles were forbidden.) My understanding is that it is difficult but very rewarding work.

OP, if you're still around, this is actually a great suggestion for how to get to know Jesus (because what man means for evil, God can make good). Contact a prison or jail that is accepting volunteers. You can also link up with a church that has a pre-existing prison ministries program.

This. It's extremely immature to waste hours upon hours being snarky to total strangers about a subject you don't even care about. You're clearly in it for the thrill of abusing people. THAT'S immature.

I'm currently using a study bible:
The Catholic Study Bible The New American Bible (Hardcover)

http://www.rakuten.com/prod/the-catholic-study-bible/219606014.html?listingId=-1&scid=pla_google_rakuten.com&adid=17379&gclid=CL_h78He4r4CFVJnOgodcn4AzQ

I really love the commentary. I want to take some courses but don't have time. However, the Archdioceses has a series of online courses that each center on a different theme like Sacraments. My parish pays the fee for us if we register.

My parents watch EWTN which is a Catholic cable channel. Lots of programs about ways to live the teachings of Jesus.

What is snarky about saying it's not mature to believe in fairy tales?

OP,

Have you considered going on a volunteer mission to build (or repair) homes? I know missionaries often get a bad rap, but today's missions are usually less about preaching and baptizing and more about painting and weatherproofing.

Don't worry about whether or not you you have any construction skills. Just like Habitat for Humanity doesn't require experience, most mission leaders will teach you how to nail down shingles and do other tasks until you feel competent.

Actually, I'm hoping that people might read for insight and information and some who have doubts might see that they are well founded.

Then why don't you present your case in an adult, mature way? Instead of the toe-curlingly bad "jokes" and all the nasty snark. A few rational and well-reasoned arguments would go much further to achieving your (supposed) goal. Sadly, it looks like your true goal is to be the playground bully.

first of all, there's more than one atheist here. Secondly -- have you looked in the mirror yet?

np. You don't see how this is not conducive for dialogue?

Um, I ignored you the first time you said that because it was ... stupid and unfunny. But you forced me to say that you're stupid and unfunny.

You're welcome!
