The posters DC moving from another state might have a point, MCPS did not give that student the chance to apply. This new student might have higher scores then any magnet child at Blair. |
You're the obtuse one. CAP is not technically called a "magnet" for some bureaucratic MoCo reason, although it is one of three application programs in MoCo. The science magnet is the only technical "magnet" at Blair and it's also the subject of this thread. Also, you can't read: I said clearly that my CAP kid did NOT see many non-magnet kids in the magnet class. So I guess we agree on the point that the science magnet is not awash in "average" kids because these kids have enough common sense to know that they wouldn't do well in a typical magnet class, which is an AP class smooshed into a single semester. |
My question: What the hell is wrong with OP?
This is the 5th, 6th (more?) thread she's started to bash Blair. A school her kid does not and never will attend, because she moved out of the Blair cluster because she doesn't like diversity. |
Hey now!! With that mindset we should let everyone in, afte all they might have a higher score than any magnet child at Blair!!! |
If you don't have anything constructive to add don't feel pressured to read the thread. |
Hust to be clear, r u sayin' that a magnet class is just an AP class smooshed into one semester? |
This thread has been useful in shedding light on the Blair magnet program.
To recap: 04/07/2014 19:21 First of all, The Post's Challenge Index is merely a measure of how many kids are taking AP tests. Blair is the largest school in the state of Maryland, and a lot of those kids are not college-bound. The college-bound kids, they're doing just fine, as the college admission results indicate every year. 04/07/2014 20:09 The Intel Science winners are from the Magnet yes, but any kid who is high in math/science can take those classes. It's the same at RM- kids can take the IB classes and don't have to 'test' in. 04/07/2014 22:07 If you can provide evidence a student is qualified to take the magnet-level math/science, there is space, and the teacher agrees, any Blair student can take any class. It isn't any more difficult. 04/08/2014 09:29 To be fair, I am not sure this was always the policy at Blair. Is it possible that the new principal instituted this policy fairly recently? Benefit of doubt for the haters. From the Blair newspaper (http://silverchips.mbhs.edu/story/12272): “Finally, Junior Marie-Therese Burton concluded the Town Hall with a question regarding county Magnet teachers. “It seems that the Magnet is becoming assimilated with the rest of the school. I would like you to address how the Magnet will be preserved as a special program,” she said. Dr. Starr emphasized that the county cannot change magnet program structure. “I will not and cannot be changing the Magnet structure. I have not diminished [nor] increased magnet programs.”” 04/11/2014 08:49 But like I said, my DD is there and, aside from a few issues with the administration, we are pretty happy with the educational experience. She is surrounded by great peers, she is doing well and plenty of good colleges are calling. 04/11/2014 20:07 I know, we moved from out of state in Jan and the school admin placed her specifically in this class. It was nothing I did as a parent. I have no connections here. My DD is extremely motivated and crazy smart with numbers. I know that Blair would do the same for any student that has scores, previous class work, demonstrates ability and wants a challenge. 04/12/2014 09:17 So I guess we agree on the point that the science magnet is not awash in "average" kids because these kids have enough common sense to know that they wouldn't do well in a typical magnet class, which is an AP class smooshed into a single semester. IN SUMMARY: The Blair magnet is open to “any student that has scores, previous class work, demonstrates ability and wants a challenge.” If you move to Blair you don’t need to go through the agony of a magnet test, or selection by a committee to take magnet classes. The magnet classes are just AP at a faster pace. |
No, of course it's not exactly that. But take the Chem, Physics and Stat classes - they are one semester and kids take the AP tests in spring. So while the content is tailored for the magnet program, they do cover much of the same material as an AP class. |
The whole thread is unconstructive and stupid. OP is unconstructive and stupid (at least when it comes to her sheer ignorance about the program and school she's constantly bashing). Does that help put the previous comment into context? Yes, we'd all like to know what's wrong with OP. |
Just move on to another thread. |
The chem, physics, and stat classes that last a semester do not cover anything close to what AP requires. They do not cover anything at depth to be useful. |
To all those who like to call this thread stupid or bash the OP---just recognize your own stupidity-you don't need to be on this thread. You can do something useful like holding up a sign at Four Corners. |

The thing is, OP is obsessive and never.gives.up. Also, she sock puppets herself to make it seem like even one other person agrees with her, and also to keep the thread alive. So, why not take 10 seconds to point out what an obsessed idiot she is? |
