I think spending $5000 on a diamond bracelet is a ridiculous waste of money but then....it's not my money.

There MAY have been some miscommunication but I don't doubt for one second that the clerk thought "this poor Black woman can't afford that bag so I'll save her some time."

I agree. The shop clerk is lying; Oprah's telling the truth. I saw the interview segment where Oprah talks about what happened. I believe it happened exactly the way she said it did.

The shop girl is just trying to save face, because everyone know nows she's a racist prick. And she turned away one of the world's richest and most famous people. That's bad for business.

Yikes that bag is an ugly mess. If that's worth 38k, I really need to get my sewing machine back out.

None of your damn business what people do with THEIR money.

So in a society where some people were purchasing million dollar pairs of pants and other people were starving, it would be "nobody's business?" I don't agree.

I'm not a Oprah fan, but I have respect for her because she DIDN'T pull the "don't you know who I am" schtick.

No she just called the poor woman out in front of everyone in the world.

Much respect for that.

Oprah didn't mention the store. Once she mentioned the situation in the interview other people (who apparently had way too much time on their hands) did some research and outed the store. Granted- I'm sure she knew that would happen, but it's different than O saying, "Susie, who works in the bag store, is a racist."

I've done work with press - this was an "on the record interview" - Oprah may be a lot of things, but she isn't stupid.

She knew that they would find the store and the salesclerk. Please.

O's net worth 2.9 billion, 38k =0.0013% of her net worth, her income is around 200 million(moves up and down every about 100 million)38k is 0.019% of her yearly income. If your income is 100k , it's like spending $19.

Not your money...not your business. They earn their money and whether or not you like or think what they do with it is moral thats life. Deal.

You are most definitely correct.
But the point is, it was in the context of questioning about racism.
O did not set up a press conference to report this.
She was asked about racism -- and this was an example.
Sucks for them (the store I mean)

I literally could not care less. I know many people misuse literally, but in this case it's true. #whoeffin'cares

Yeah, Marie Antoinette held that view. Many French peasants did not. Didn't work so well for her.
Nobody is hacking Oprah's account and tracking her purchases. She's bitching in a public forum that someone didn't think she had enough money to buy a bag that cost a vulgar amount of money, and suggested that she purchase another bag that cost somewhat less money, although likely still a vulgar amount. If she's going to make an issue of it, people are entitled to have an opinion.

I'm inclined to believe Oprah's account of what took place, especially in light of the store owner's lame excuses. Was this overt racism? I don't know but I do know that this salesclerk was condescending and perhaps more than a bit lazy.

btw Neiman-Marcus also sells Tom Ford handbags--most likely with a lesser markup than you will get at a haughty Swiss shop. If you are looking for impeccable customer service buy from them.

You have got to be kidding me. Oprah opened a school for underprivileged girls in South Africa. She has also donated millions of dollars to schools and scholarships here in the US. Even if she didn't, I think she can spend her money any which way she pleases. But since it is your business, why don't you tell all of us where your spare change goes?

That is a truly ugly handbag.
