In indiana you can buy a home for 15k so it is all relative. In the dc area that home would be over 350k http://www.realtor.com/realestateandhomes-search/type-single-family-home/price-na-150000/pg-293?cmid=1102929,1102955,1102956,1102957,1102958,1102977,1102994,1103048,1103084,1103086,1103134,1103141,1103150,1103082 |
Yeah. That may be so, but I can almost gaurantee its not halfway decent. |
That's the point! A $350K house in certain parts of DC isn't "decent" so they have to live elsewhere. OK, you get it? What good is making a million dollars a year if gas prices are $10,000 a gallon? It's all relative. |
No one said you had to live IN DC. There are plenty of people who work IN DC who live in homes that cost 350k or less. It is all about choices. If you CHOOSE to spend the majority of your money on housing, then don't act surprise when the money is gone. You spent it! That was your choice. For most, money is not an unlimited resource. So choose how you spend it, but stop whining about it. -Not pp |
I'm not seeing anyone saying that's the issue. They live where they live and they're having problems budgeting with their current income. I'm not seeing how being critical of them for discussing what they must contend with and saying "Oh, you poor dears" is accomplishing anything. What we have here (especially from a website who attracts perpetual losers and complainers that found their way over to this site via a link from that site) are a bunch of individuals making comments who are not qualified to lend their opinion on any topic, much less one concerning finances. |
Pretty much. I have tons of friends with multiple kids and 5-figure salaries in the area who live in Bethesda, Rockville, Arlington, Falls Church and the list goes on. If you choose to live within the district, you know you pay more for less, get whored on your taxes, etc. It comes with the territory and we all know that. It has nothing to do with making enough. It has everything to do with figuring out the difference between what you need and what you want. But if $375K isn't enough, don't blame someone else because most of us live quite happily on half that. If you are having a hard time making those ends meet, you're doing something wrong, even in the DC area. |
People who think and speak poorly about rich people will never become rich themselves. If their subconscious mind tells them that rich people are greedy, stupid, selfish, etc., then they would never want to be like them and therefore will remain poor forever. |
Going on vacations and being able to enroll in summer camps ARE luxuries. Try supporting a family of four on 70k every year, like my dad did for 20+ years as my brother and I grew up. We were still both able to join club swimming, have gym memberships, get a car to drive when we turned sixteen, and have full internet, t.v., and cell service on the latest phones. Try living within your means. |
Because they are choosing to spend it. It is basic grade school math. If you are going to choose to spend the bulk of your money on housing, then you can't expect to have that money left to save for both emergencies and retirement, oh I want private school too, oh Ivacations too, wait wait we need to eat out, I need a nanny too, then there are basic life expenses... Basic math. Pick and choose. It is not that hard. Stop acting as if you should live the life of the rare individual who has 50 million available to them. Notice the key word....rare. Deal with it, or go ask a 5th grader to help you budget. |
Your childish viewpoint of their situation did nothing to change anything. Good chance they're fully aware that a less expensive house would mean more disposable income to spend elsewhere. But they're trying to deal with the situation they are currently in, not a situation they aren't in. Saying "Oh you poor dears" is quicker and would have said the same thing. |
Apparently this thread has been linked to from both Reddit and Democratic Underground. Welcome folks. While this is a largely anonymous site with a great deal of leeway granted to posters, please refrain from f-bombs and c-words. Rather than spending your 4th blowing up this thread, might I suggest that you blow up some fireworks as I intend to do? That would be much appreciated.

Aah that explains the panties in a wad. I don't get the big deal, news flash: there are people richer than you. I make $275k, its fine, its enough, there will always be people who make more and people who make less. It's just life. The guy who makes $50k is going to seem rich to the guy making $20k - just as the guy making $100k seems rich to the guy making $50k. What a bunch of pansy asses on that site. They need to grow a pair and accept that life isn't always fair, the best man doesn't always win, and sometimes people get lucky and others don't. |
Except some of us saying this stuff ARE rich and are pretty embarrassed by the bellyaching of other high income earners here |
I noticed you deleted the post where someone hoped Id kill myself. Such nice people! |
Also, all these people making 375K and unable to keep a budget, or blaming childcare and housing costs.. Do you think you are the only income that needs to do this?people making a quarter of what you (we) make have to pay for childcare and housing, and yet can still keep a budget.
I know We did when we made significantly less. |
