Please don't just take a spot at a charter school because you want free care.

As most families in DC do, we applied to many, many charter and public schools. Thankfully, we did end up getting a spot at our first choice. But, no matter what school we would have ended up going to, we would have embraced it and helped the school as much as possible. Why would I take my children to a school but continue on the outside to complain/grumble about the school? Constructive criticism - or better yet, providing feedback and suggestions for improved - is fine. But, what's the point of attending a school that you are not embracing? Perhaps I placed to much emphasis on the "free" care because I couldn't figure out why people would just criticize a school that hundreds of other families would have been so THANKFUL to attend. As I stated before, there's nothing I can do other than vent on DCUM - I certainly can't hand out "sad face" stickers to the grumpy, rude parents. But, I personally don't want other grumpy people at our school - if the reason they are grumpy because they wanted another school.

Finally, as people will be deciding over the next couple of months:
1) PLEASE think hard about the CHARTER school you choose.
2) IF you don't get the school that you really wanted, then PLEASE EMBRACE the school that you do end up going to. Sure, not everyone has time to help their children's school. But, even if you are only in school 5 minutes a day - make those five minutes the best!

I'm not sure how anyone can disagree with these suggestions. But, okay, go ahead and do so.

I agree with you OP, but I don't think this is a problem unique to charter schools. Be it in any school, the workplace, organized activites, society as a whole has a bunch of grumpy, whiners out there who will always find something to complain about. (Just take a look at this board!)

Dude, I don't know what DCUM YOU read, but the DCUM I know is all sunshine, rainbows and unicorns. So STFU and stop calling us complainers and whiners, you ungrateful jerk! I'm so tired of all the complaining about our complaining! We have a right to complain... if things aren't sufficiently sunshiney, rainbowy, or unicorny enough!

Sorry, but I just love this reply.

What especially annoys me is when a "wealthy" (having more money than most) family goes to a charter school that they could care less about just because it is FREE. They want to save money for PS3 and PS4 because they couldn't get a spot in their upper NW school, but as soon as K comes along they will move their child to their in-bound school. Sure, anyone can attend the school, but when they complain about the current charter school and are just getting FREE care until they can move their little one to their, that's when it is annoying. It's also more annoying because they can certainly afford private care and let a family who really WANTS TO BE at the charter attend the school.

But then those kindergarten spots open up for other kids which was the focus of another heated thread.

Is this thread still going on? How much angst, hand-wringing, and furious typing is OP going to do before she realizes it is all for naught? None of this is going to change anyone's attitude, period.

Actually, this thread only is up again because of a truly funny post. OP has nothing to do with it's resurrection.
