I can' t bear to listen to her voice. |
it is, indeed, a medical condition: spasmodic dysphonia. http://www.dysphonia.org/ http://my.clevelandclinic.org/disorders/Spasmodic_Dysphonia/hic_Spasmodic_Dysphonia.aspx |
She is a journalist, she should write a column and keep working. I have tried for months to listen to her because I love NPR. The stories have such a great impact on my life, but I cannot last more than 2 minutes listening to her. I have to say that I don't support the station as much financially as I used to because I am concerned about their professionalism and values in keeping someone on the air that is obviously impaired at doing her job. I respect her background, I that wish Diane/NPR would find a more suitable vehicle for her contribution. |
She has spasmodic dysphonia-- basically spasms of the muscles of her voice. She's used Botox and it has helped but the effect is not long term. Tragic for a radio commenter.
I couldn't read this forum because some of the earlier posts were nauseating. There but for the grace of God... |
No, you need to play the hand you are dealt. I didn't become a pop star or tv personality because I am not great looking. Similarly, she should stick to print media or the internet now. |
17:15 here ... she is no better or worse than a Charles Krauthammer, who has a tracheotomy or some kind of throat tube that causes him to stop and gasp for breath now & then.
I've listened to her for years and am no rabid fan but I understand what the issue is and I have no issue with listening to her. Sometimes it's better and sometimes it's worse, esp. when it's near when she's going in for another treatment. Some folks here are far less understanding than what they'd want to encounter, I'm sure, if they were the one coping with the medical situation themselves. |
I'm ok with her voice. What KILLS me is how she speaks sooooo slowly on some stupid inane factoid (" thisssssss issssss the diaaaaaaane ...") but when a guest gets interesting, starts to disclose the super secret to life, whatever, she suddenly can speak fast- and CUTS THEM OFF. wth?!?!! She does this allll the time. To her own guests ! |
I so agree! She's an annoying interviewer. You can't tell me there aren't better people out there for the job. She has a voice made for print. |
+1. Voice doesn't bother me at all. I agree she sometimes cuts people off as they begin to divulge super secret details! |
It is also really easy to tell when she has 1) not read the book/work of the person being interviewed or 2) has no interest in it. Those are the worst and the ones she cuts off the most. The voice doesn't bother me at all either but what shocks me is when they play tapes of her old interviews before it started to go. The change is phenomenal. |
Is it just me or has she started cutting people off more recently? I've basically stopped listening because I'm tired if it. |
