I'm baffled by this too. I'm not saying it was purposeful because we don't know. However, it looked that way.

They headed straight toward the jet and appeared to have time to change course to avoid the plane. I'm not an expert though.

keep in mind a few rescuers are bound to need some minor medical attention under these intense conditions. so if you hear about someone being "treated" it might just be a rescuer.
