You are 100% correct.

I feel SO bad for these dogs and hope for a ban on dogs for food. I don't know what to say, we keep shipping in dogs from other states and countries and there are not enough homes for them here! Our local "rescues" can't find foster homes, they beg and plead for someone to take in "new dogs that just arrived from North Carolina". This woman on our neighborhood facebook page needed to rehome a dog she had inherited due to valid reasons. NONE of the local rescues returned her calls or emails and then some would not help her. Said rescues were basically shamed into helping her and only did so by listing her dog on their site. (She finally found a home for her dog) Yet, these same rescues then go and get dogs from other states!? They are "non profits" that end up selling the dogs for $$, they get the tax benefits of running a non profit in their homes and get to write off their acreage and yet don't help the dogs in their own towns. I feel so let down by rescues now and see them for what they really are, money making ventures. I suppose they are the smart ones, they found a loop hole!

If you think rescues make money why don't you prove it? Do you think dogs should be given away? Dogs are expensive and if get something you know it isn't valued.

Does $800 an up for a dog sound like a reasonable amount for a rescue to charge? That is not an adoption fee. That is flat out selling.

That's how much a breeder can charge. It makes no sense given they are non-profits and get donations, tax breaks, grants and more. The goal is to have a home for the dog so give them for free given the recuses get them for free.

Do you think vaccinations, surgery to neuter the shelter pet so you don't perpetuate this crisis of too many unwanted animals, rent for the shelter building and dog food are all free? I've never heard of rescue shelters being called money making enterprises. Most of them are taking in pets in all sorts of conditions with a shoestring staff.

Yes! I agree with you pp

+1 How much are these services worth?
here's what's included in the adoption fee at one shelter (and the amount is a recommended 180$ not 800$)
A wellness exam
Vaccinations like rabies, distemper, parvovirus, and Bordetella, a vaccine that helps to prevent kennel cough
Heartworm test and preventative heartworm treatment
Tick-borne disease panel
Flea and tick preventative treatment
Fecal test and deworming
Spaying or neutering
A microchip and the cost of insertion
A small administrative fee to cover the cost of processing your adoption

You think a veterinarian is donating his services 100% to neuter Fido before you take him home?

My vet was far cheaper than your fee and that should be free.

It's really twisted how Americans think about meat.

I agree with this. At least being eaten is a purposeful death.

How are these dogs being allowed to fly over? When I moved overseas for work and wanted to bring my (completely healthy, up to date shots) dog, it was almost impossible. But we're letting random dogs just fly over?

Dog meat is extremely unhealthy for people. Wanna get rabies? https://www.onegreenplanet.org/animalsandnature/major-human-health-concerns-associated-with-the-dog-meat-trade/

Dogs have been considered our companions for thousands of years. Dogs are literally tortured to death and you call it a "purposeful death?'

Here is a video of dogs being blow torched alive in China
https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/asia/yulin-dog-meat-festival-video-china-blow-torch-animal-cruelty-a8969361.html

If you don't have any interest in this topic and don't want to help fine. But, dogs have been coming from around the world for ages and no one ever critizes that! My neighbors got dogs from Bosnia!

Anyone who is indifferent to this practice of eating dogs or cats are inhumane.

Eating an animal is not inhumane. How you treat that animal to be eaten is what is inhumane, but that could be said of torturing cows and pigs, too.

Eating dogs is inhumane. Did you watch the video? We could improve our treatment of other animals. How is blow torching or shocking a dog going to help a cow and pig. Both are wrong! You don't solve one problem by creating another

Thank goodness this practice in South Korea has been banned.

There are enough dogs being euthanized in the US that this is not ok. If you care about animals you'd be a vegetarian and feed your dogs and animals a vegetarian diet. It's silly to argue value in one animal over another.

This seems completely shady. They have people checking in the dogs as their own and handing them over to the rescues to resell.

If this were legal, the rescues would bring the dogs over themselves directly.

First of all, dogs need to eat meat to be healthy. My dog is not going to be vegetarian.

Second, you seem to think dog meat and other meat ( chicken, cow, etc) are all the same. They are not. Dog meat is quite unhealthy for human consumption. I will post my information again : https://www.onegreenplanet.org/animalsandnature/major-human-health-concerns-associated-with-the-dog-meat-trade/

Third you can help dogs in this country AND also around the world. It's like sending money after an Earthquake in California and Italy. We send help to those we can. To me eating dogs who have been our companions is unethical and inhumane. I do wish we killed cows, pigs etc more humanely.

And what do you mean shady? You said yourself that rescues here have their hands full. If you don't care about these dogs why do you feel the need to comment? Why do you care if other people are rescuing dogs?

No dogs don’t need meat. You want them to eat meat. How many animals died to feed your dog.

I’m not sending money to anyone. How about helping people instead?

There is no humane way to kill animals. If you are an advocate stop eating meat. Simple.

I am an advocate for not eating dogs and cats. Not meat in general. So no I will not stop eating animals that have been consumed for thousands of years. And neither will my dog.

If you don't support this group than don't send money. Simple!
You don't get to tell me whom I can support or not. I help people and animals btw.

And no mention of the fact that eating dogs is extremely unhealthy for human consumption.

There are better ways of killing animals. And btw where is that person who claimed these dogs have been killed for a ' purpose?'

There is nothing more to say really.

So, you are being hypocritical. Do you know how many animals lose their life each year to feed you and your dog? Their lives are just as important.

If their culture is to eat dogs, why do you get to overrule them?

Yes! Call me a hypocrite! I value the life of a dog over that of a chicken. I proudly wear my hyporite badge.

We are all hypocrites in that we judge each other all the time! We tell other countries not to circumsize their girls or you should educate them. Isn't that telling someone else's culture what to do? So you are one too unless you don't believe that we should educate girls in Afganistan or Iran. Or that girl circumsion is a 'cultural choice'

South Korea just banned the dog meat trade. Young people do not eat dog. So if that is their culture now why are you forcing them to go back to their old ways?

In the wild animals eat other animals. If lions and such didn't we would have an overpopulation of prey animals. How would that affect the environment? Are you going to stop a lion from eating a deer? How would you do so? I believe in eating chickens. Isn't it my right to feed mysel and my dog chickens? Aren't you the hypocrite too for taking away my culture?

Save the chickens if you want. But if you can not tell others whom they can save or not.

If it’s now banned bringing dogs over to save them makes less sense. My culture says no eating chicken…….isnt it there right to eat what animal they choose just like you can choose what animal you eat?

Do you believe it is ok to circumsize girls? Do you think we shouldn't educate those societies who do? You are telling me what to do. Aren't you therefore shoving your culture down my throat?

If you don't want to help don't. It doesn't affect you. Start a thread about saving chickens.

Forgot to add the ban isn't taking place until 2025 or something like that. So there are older people harvesting, torturing dogs alive and then eating them.

You mean the same way people are eating cows, chickens, fish, and other animals?

Look at this carefully. They are asking you to do something illegal.

What’s illegal about it? As long as it has all the right paperwork it doesn’t sound illegal at all.

No, we cannot as if we were the shelters here would not be full.

The shelters here are not full of adorable dogs. The decent dogs go almost immediately. What’s left are nasty pits or relderly dogs with expensive medical conditions. We really don’t have a problem with great adoptable dogs languishing in shelters.

'Nasty pits' that is your opinion that they are nasty. Btw shelters are also filled with huskys and big dogs like shepherds

If they are healthy and don’t have major behavioral problems, the shepherd and husky mixes go fast. I have repeatedly called about ones that were available one day and gone within a few days. There is not a surplus of shepherds languishing in shelters. Look at any shelter online sheet and 90% will be pit or obvious oit mixes … then call about one of the non-pit dogs and they will likely be gone. Sometimes they have a geriatric lap dog that belonged to some old lady who went into assisted living that is not well socialized.

I don't eat any animals. Why do you if you care so much about animals and rescuing them? It makes no sense to kill 100 chickens a year to feed you and your dog and have no consideration for those chickens dying.

Why should it be free? Vets need to live and buy stuff too. The majority of them have vet school debt. Plus dogs are expensive. If you get the dog for free you don't realize and ultimately will return the dog to the shelter because you can not feed it.

Then you go out and save American dogs! Do you only give money to Americans charities? After all, why should we help others who are suffering if all of our problems haven't been solved?

I do not care about any dogs, American or otherwise. And in general I do like to support charitable causes that are local to me.

Meanwhile, 1.5 million shelter animals are euthanized a year to make way for space in animal shelters. We'd be doing earth a service by eating those animals.

So you eat dogs? I also don't eat frogs, rats, squirrels or cicadas

Frog legs are quite common to eat, and I think cicadas were on some DC menus during the X spawning. Apparently, they are high protein. My dad grew up very rural America. His grandmother cooked squirrel. I don't see any difference in eating dog if you already eat cow, pork, chicken, lamb, etc. It's just another meat. I do have an issue with endangered animals on the menu.

We can do both. It’s not one or the other.

Weird, because if you look around tons of dogs available to adopt. Why not put a priority on getting those adopted before bring over more?

Tons of dogs available to adopt and also tons of people adopting. The question is really whether there are dogs languishing …and I really don’t see that, except for dogs with a lot of pit in the mix or dogs with obvious issues. I’m not necessarily saying it makes sense to fly these Korean dogs over here to adopt but I reject the premise that there are lots of nice admirable dogs for which they are not ready adopters. There is still unmet demand for adoptable dogs that are not part pit, IME. Even out West, they are not putting down non-pit shephard mixes that are non-biters. And in the south they just ship them up here and everyone takes them.
