Acting attracts gay men. It just does. Go to any podunk community theater and 1/3 to half of the male actors are gay. Broadway - same story. Even high school or college theater -- you get a much higher percentage of gay men than in the non-theater world.
So why on earth would it be any different in Hollywood? If the level below Hollywood is 35% gay amongst the men (making that number up and it's probably conservative) but then suddenly the ones who make it big are all straight? Think about it...that doesn't make any sense. When they make it big, they suddenly "stop" being gay and the industry is happy to cover that up with them.
I think a lot of people in the whole world are gay or bi. I think past percentages based on self-reporting were too low, as people didn’t want to say so, or had no language for what they were, or didn’t define their lives as gay or bi, and I think historically there have been many closeted men and women who married and led outwardly heterosexual lives. We probably all had them in our ancestry. I think there were many people like this in Hollywood, behind the scenes too, and it has always been a “dream factory” that flat out made up stories about actors’ backgrounds and romances, along with their fake names.
I’m fascinated by rumors about lavender marriages and who had or has them, along with more recent ones about actors having contract marriages but there is never anyone who talks about it or spills the beans. How can that be? We know about some fake stories because they’ve been revealed. One was Rock Hudson’s marriage. Another I read about was Keenan Wynn, his wife, and Van Johnson, because Wynn’s son wrote a book exposing it. I’ve heard about Spencer Tracy and others, but nothing definitive. I’m surprised if it’s so common, why don’t we know more about it? I can see Scientology doing these contracts and keeping secrets for certain actors, and fully believe they’re capable of this, but what about the many supposed others?
Also, because of the perception or reality that more gay men are in theater/are actors, maybe it’s just a projection that some of them are, especially the more desirable ones, like Richard Gere?
