They found out the genetic causes of Down Syndrome, and now most of those babies get aborted. Did that research do existing babies any good? I remember Reading an article from years ago where they found a drug that helps DS kids learn, but it wasn’t pursued because they found a way to screen for it prenatally. Of course, I can’t find it ten years later.

I can see why PP is mad at all the research looking for genetic causes for autism. Once new parents can just abort autistic fetuses, the financial incentive to treat existing cases fries. up.

If I’d never read that article, I’d think the pp was crazy, but I get it.

Yup. The bright side is that they likely won’t ever find a real genetic test or biomarker for autism, apart from those few genetically related syndromes that exist.

Assortative mating may be a part of the cause of the increase in incidence of autism. No research or abortion are not the only two options.

Fwiw, my kids and I have a genetic disease that is associated with an increased risk of ASD, and my kids have ASD. Treating the genetic disease with prescription supplements has really helped their ASD. They aren't cured but they are currently very mild, in the Very High Functioning category, if there were one.

Can you explain more about what treatment people with DS need that there is no longer funding for?

This article is a decade old but I couldn’t find anything to refute it the premise - that births of babies with Down Syndrome in the USA have remained stable or even increased over time. https://www.theatlantic.com/health/archive/2012/04/why-so-many-babies-are-still-being-born-with-down-syndrome/254869/#:~:text=The%20number%20of%20babies%20born,the%20childbearing%20population%20in%20
