After graduation, rent if lives at home?

Anonymous
Our current challenge is not to do with DC living at home but with a DC who wanted to remain living in college town but who cannot make enough to live independently. DC doesn't want to live at home to save money because DC doesn't like the "no pot smoking, no overnight guests" rules that would come with it. DC also got a pet during college which cannot come to live at our house because of allergic family members. We are already paying for car insurance, health insurance and paid for the car. DC graduated college 100% debt free. And yes, DC would have more money to live independently if DC chose to not have a pet and to smoke less weed. (I have not said this out loud. Though DC's younger sister did . . . .. )

Why would you charge your kid rent?

Assuming your are living in the same home as when they went to college, you didn't charge them in HS, so why now? As long as they are working, responsible and respectful (letting you know when they will be home, if they are not home for the night, etc.) and not blowing thru all the money on a spending spree/drinking spree, I will let my kids live at home for free.
Let them save $$$ so they can perhaps buy something sooner....

Some "kids" don't save... they buy expensive clothes, cocktails and vacations, while letting their parents provide food, utilities and housing. How about making a budget with your child where you offer to let them live rent free, if they put X in the savings account (or you take the rent and save it for them?)

Let your DC try to live independently. See what happens.
