What do you *REALLY* think of Atheists?

Atheists who are Atheists because they parents were and have never looked into anything else? Disappointing.

Does this mean believers in God should do deep research into the Loch Ness monster before declaring that they don't believe in him?

How about Santa Claus and fairies?

I don't really come onto the Religion section of this site but this thread is in the most recent list so I took a peak. It's truly amazing to me how many non-believers spend their day attacking believers over their believes. They spend their days trying to talk people out of their religions. This strikes me as pure evil. Why would anyone do that? Why do you care if other people belive in God? Live and let live. The hate and disgust here is eye-opening for sure.

Why did you decide to post about how disgusting you think non-believers are?

Do you spend your days looking for groups that you disagree with to tell them how disgusting you think they are?

How would you like be called disgusting just because you respond to people who think you're disgusting -- just because you don't believe in something they believe in, without any evidence?

Is talking people out of their religion the same as disagreeing about religion to you? Disgusting.

DP.

A++ for deflection. Pro tip: this mirroring thing isn’t a working for you.

Wrong. Bad logic. By that logic, anyone who takes a side in a discussion can only be on the side of the alternative? That's nonsense.

DP and I don’t think that was the logic. The logic was probably that so many of you frequent the religious forum and threads about religion that you have really left religion behind. And no, coming on here to blast Catholics several times a week isn’t a public service or however you tey to justify it.

Does the fact that you frequent the religion forum often enough to know that atheists blast catholics several time a week mean that you are about to reject catholicism?

Do you think the religion forum is just for religious believers, or can people with different Points of view about religion participate?

Many atheists were once religious, but I don't think that many currently religious people were once atheists, and thus are not in a very good position to speculate on how atheists think.

I’m not Catholic, but it’s impossible not to notice the atheist religion-bashers and Catholic-bashers.

Of course people with different points of view can post.

But some of you are
1. evangelicals for atheism, as somebody above said, or
2. so hateful towards religion, especially but not limited to Catholicism…

that it’s clear religion still lives rent-free in your heads. What’s the saying about hatred being closer to love than neutrality is? You haven’t achieved the freedom you think you have.

And you think you have, I take it. Besides, who says atheists think they've achieved freedom? They can easily hide - pretend to be religious, that is. But you see what happens when they don't.

This is a religion discussion forum, not a line at Starbucks. This place is for discussing religion - in fact that is all it is for. Without discussing religion there is no reason to be here.

How about this: instead of ad hominem posts why don't you discuss the topic? Why don't you counter with your own positions and facts?

If I were to respond as you do - with ad hominem - I could easily say that your sensitivity to criticisms of your beliefs don't say much for your level of conviction.

But that would be unfair if I did that, right?

Freedom from religion, obviously. Some of you are still chained to it, whether you’re 1. hate trolling or 2. evangelizing for atheism here.

Huh? This makes no sense. This isn’t a thread to discuss whether God exists. It’s a thread to discuss our opinions on atheists. And I’ve posted above that I’ve known some thoughtful ones, but somebody wants examples of negative experiences so now I’m posting about atheist hate trolling and evangelism.

You can’t ask me a question but then call the answer ad hominems. Unless you’re trying to deflect, which seems likely.

Ok, how would you classify this behavior? Would you defend or condemn it? And as a reminder, I'm not Catholic. From the Episcopalians thread a few minutes ago, comparing Episcopalians to Catholics: “less touchy priests”.

Didn't join that thread, and it is IMHO a pithy comment that is in bad taste as that is not a laughing matter. But you can't deny the horrible recent history of the catholic church on this, can you? And I was raised catholic. So, very good point very badly made is how I would "classify" it.

My advice: trolls are best ignored. You are feeding the beast by bringing that up in another thread.

DP. The general public is disgusted by the abuses and systemic coverup by members of the Catholic Church. It caused many Catholics to step away and look at other religions, including Episcopalian. It’s a fair comment.

OP here. Lots of comments about this one already so I'll go a different direction.

Richard Dawkins asserts that children are not Methodist or <insert whatever parents are>. A child is "a child of Methodist parents" because that child is someone who should get to make their own choice. They should have time to explore, consider options, see what resonates with what they think or feels right to believe and children simply haven't yet had time to do this. When they're ready, they can declare what they are and choose to believe and we would all do well to give them that space. They might choose the same as their parents; they might choose something else.

I like this idea. It feels very respectful.

OP here. I appreciate the honesty.

I know religion and politics are intertwined, and I don't want to turn this into a political discussion (other places to do that) but from my observation, religion seems to determine politics and is less likely the other way around. Just a response to your third item in the list. I can see churches or religious communities trying to be persuasive around political views and choices more than I've seen political parties pressure people into religious beliefs. Not saying it never happens, just a view of the likelihood of each angle.

Many of you devoutly religious folks on here would secretly love to implement religious laws. It’s pretty clear. I mean you won’t outright say it, but you frighten me. You see the Pew studies. You see declining attendance at church. So you have all these scary efforts to double down and you’ve got your zealot state government officials pushing increasingly unpopular policy trying to stop things from “changing”. I mean let’s be real, many of you actually like Russian society because of its reliance on a strongman dictator who shields himself with the Russian Orthodox Church and bashes gay people. You love it. So a stupid thread asking the indoctrinated how they feel about atheists is just a weird post seeking validation for unreal beliefs. Grow up.

Nothing. Whatever you need to believe in that makes you a good, kind person is fine by me. If you worship God, Dolly Parton, blueberries or nothing at all I dont care.

Not a stupid thread in my opinion. I'm grateful that OP started it and has chimed in along the way.
