Bravo to the new School Chancellor in NYC for his leadership! When is MCPS going to step up? Our elementary reading scores are dismal and there are huge disparities—and we know that the curriculum the system uses is the wrong way to teach reading.

This is key part of curriculum 3.0 which they're been developing.

PP are you connected to MCPS? What else do you know about this? Would be interested in more info.

OMG. That poster is TROLLING. They didn't get a bite the first time they mentioned it so they bumped their own comment. Don't fall for it.

Is 3.0 also being developed by Discovery?

We are technically on 3.0. So, if its new it would be 4.0

Does MCPS central office not understand the science of how kids learn to read, or what? Who would be the one(s) to change this?

Some kids learn better with pictures/sight words, some learn better with phonics. There is no one size fits all approach. Why don't you teach your kid via phonics? Nothing stopping you.

How does MCPS teach it? Do they do both?

Not sure, we taught our kids ourselves before K. I think its a mixed approach.

Studies show that phonics is much better for teaching kids to read. Several were cited up-thread. MCPS should be following best practices on this, and they are not. No surprise to those of us who have been in the school system for years.

Thats great if it works better for your kids. It wasn't best for mine.

Then your child is an exception. MCPS should be doing what studies show works best for kids. They did not select an evidence-based curriculum.

Did your kids try both? Did they fail to learn with phonics?

I understood it had really promising results for struggling readers and there were plans to expand to more schools, but nothing I read clearly explained what the program was. My kid is in HS now, but our neighborhood ES was one of the pilot schools.

Was that successful program using a different curriculum, or just a better method for teaching the current crappy one?

Our local Title I school is in the first year of the pilot, so Kindergarten is using Really Great Reading.
