The principal at Tyler is leaving

The official announcement was made a couple of days ago. The assistant principal will finish out the school year. No word on any replacement possibilities yet.

Poor Tyler. The school has had so many leadership transitions. I really liked its principal, Terry Dade. I wonder where he is going. The year its other good principal left and they had a succession of substitute principals was terrible. They lost maybe half of the middle class families at the school. Just when the school seemed perched to be one of the better schools on the Hill (but where people still had a chance of getting in OOB) this happens.

Cue the Rhee haters in 3...2...1...

He was hired as a principal in Fairfax Co. where he lives so I guess that's that...poor Tyler!

Pp, thanks for sharing that. I was wondering why he left. As the other pp noted, it's a shame for Tyler which has really been getting in gear lately. I'm guessing the selection of the next principal will be critical to the future of the school.

Rhee - hater here. I guess amped up salary plans aren't the recipe to keep this principal jazzed to make a difference? And who leaves an admin position mid-year? So much for loyalty from the people she's brought in. Oh wait, a history of random sweeps of principals may not inspire loyalty...

Personally I can't stand Rhee but the reality is that we don't know why Dade is leaving. It might have nothing to do with Rhee. I am planning on asking a Tyler parent next time I see her.

It was a new teachers' contract. Not for principals.

He taught in Fairfax before, so maybe he's just going home. His background is arts integration. Tyler was supposed to add arts integration on top of autism and Spanish programs. That's a lot. I wouldn't blame him for wanting more focus. Not everything is about Rhee. Hate her or not.

As pp noted, he did previously teach in Fairfax and he still lives there making for a difficult commute. In his departure letter (I am a current Tyler parent) he noted trying to balance being a good husband, father and principal. I think he just wanted to be closer to home. He may have tried for a principal position in Fairfax before without success. But now he has proven himself at Tyler, probably making it easier to secure a spot close to home. I, for one, wish him the best of luck in his new position.

16:22 -- are you just a troll who looks to defend at all costs against constructive criticism? the same style of writing shows up with regard to any critique of the private school, Sheridan (which deserves much criticism). The "...3-2-1" approach is a pre-empt to taking any further posts as not to be serious or worth considering. One needn't "hate Rhee" to see a lot to be desired with "personnel decisions". The beauty of this forum is that parents may share freely their concerns, and together we may find solutions. As a DCPS parent, I'm very much a grey area person --some things are exceedingly better since Rhee took over (but much of that is simply due to the freedom ANY superintendent in her position would have under BRAND NEW MAYORAL CONTROL and unprecedented powers). Some things are worse. Overall and in general, things are improving but much is due to better facilities (NOT a Rhee credit). Some things are better due to better teaching (sometimes because they are scared mindless, others required the fear she instills). Sorry to rant, but please don't lump every critique of a DCPS upheaval to be all "Rhee haters" getting out their urge.

It might be worth noting here that Terry Dade was hired by Michelle Rhee in 2008. He's one of her recruits who "shares her educational creed":

Sounds pretty clear that this was about his wanting to be in Fairfax and now having a chance to be. Rhee hired him at 33 to be a principal; I'm guessing he wasn't getting a principal position in Fairfax that young. Now he has two years under his belt, and he can go home.

Well, what a shame. I found him very impressive at the MOTH School Information Night two years ago, and again at the open house this year. In fact, he made a big deal at the open house about how he was committed to working in DCPS, and chose to be there over Fairfax ... perhaps the commute wore down that commitment.

I guess I feel slightly better about being in the triple digits on the Tyler PS waiting list, since he was one of the reasons I felt so strongly about the school. But what a shame for the school.

And per a previous post, I believe Tyler is already doing arts integration, not preparing to launch it ...

And my point is I wonder how many of her 33 yr old principals will bail when they have the chance. Rhee does not value experience. Nice to be the training ground!

Or, he used DCPS as a stepping stone so that he could get a position in Fairfax. Had he been a young principal recruited before Rhee came in, I could see blaming her. But she recruited him. I just don't think you can pin this one on her.
