I am not from the DMV so forgive me if this is dumb/obvious.... but why don't I hear more about W&L on this board? Not considered any good/desirable?
Just curious because an old work colleague married a guy who went there, and I remembered it's in VA. It's not that well-known where I live. Thx. |
| It’s a good school but it’s too “southern money” and Greek for most NoVa kids. NoVa kids want prestige (T20 or so) or value (UVA) W & L is very good education but it’s got a particular social vibe that these kids aren’t interested in. |
Wow. Talk about generalizing and projecting your own opinions onto 17 year old kids. |
Only if you’re new to this board. I answered based on what I read here. You new? Or an attention-seeking troll?
My personal story is that my own kid didn’t like it. We visited. Felt just like a small rich southern high school. And it’s the size of most NoVa high schools. Good education? Yes. Appealing to DMV kids? Not so much. |
| Well I’d venture it’s less desirable to VA kids because it competes with UVA and W&M for interest and loses that battle. |
W&L is way better than W&M. |
| It’s a weird combo - academically tough for admission but a total party school once you are there for pretty southern rich white kids. Lots of TX, MS, GA kids. |

Too southern. Too greek. Too preppy. Too white.
Gives good fin aid to internationals. |
its also double the price. |
| It allegedly has the highest percentage of participants in Greek life among US colleges and universities. It is 74% white (compared to 62% nationally). |
Retarded post |
| “Way better” and “retarded”. Sounds like a 16 year old W&L hopeful has joined the thread. |
Its really not, i know the town quite well, having spent a fair bit of time there over the last 10 years. The countryside around Lexington is very republican and of course you also have VMI right across the street from W&L. That said, the town itself has been very liberal of late and the W&L students definitely skew liberal. This all came to head recently in the Red Hen incident.https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/onpolitics/2019/05/15/red-hen-owner-kicking-out-sarah-sanders-great-virginia-business/3676661002/ Yes you could say it's too southern because they haven't changed their name so sure it's not necessarily a "woke" campus, but it is not "republican". https://www.wvtf.org/news/2021-06-04/washington-lee-university-to-keep-its-name |
| Too Greek, too southern. Just yuck (for my DC, anyway). |
