My kid in on 7th all honors ( English, math, science and history). Is having all honors considered high potential? Do I need to apply to have them in aap?
What is the advantage of Honors classes? |
|
Does honors algebra in 8th still get you to Calculus in 12?
Would regular Algebra in 8th also still get you to Calculus in 12? |
| Algebra leads to geometry which leads to Algebra 2 which leads to precalc which leads to calculus. To end up with calc senior year, you need to take geometry as a freshman. You can take honors or regular for any of the classes leading up to calc and still have the same sequence. |
| There is no AAP in high school and there is very little difference between AAP/Honors courses at the middle school where I teach. So no, you dont need to try to refer them to AAP. They can take the same courses in high school as a kid in MS AAP. |
| It usually means you won't have as many ESOL or SPED kids in the class. |
Op here. Thank you for your reply. So there is technically no advantage of taking Honors if both routes lead to Calc in 12th right? Wouldn’t it be better to have them take regular Algebra and make a higher grade than Honors Algebra and make a low A? Thank you! |
Honors looks better on transcripts, gives a GPA bump and goes faster and more in depth which would better prepare a student for the next class in the sequence. |
| Honors is more rigorous and more challenging. Your child should learn more and it helps develop study skills and the like for HS. If your child is ready for honors, have them take honors classes. Gen Ed classes are fine but less challenging for a kid who is capable of more. |
+1 And you get a .5 bump for honors classes. |
Thank you both for your reply! I’ll keep her in Honors! Thank you! |
+1. Some of it depends on the middle school too. Definitely go with Honors if there are a lot of students at the school who are below grade level and your child isn't. |
Is the .5 bump for middle school or high school? My child will be in AAP in middle - will they get a grade bump too? |
| If this site offered downvoting my post would get it - the truth isn't always pretty or nice. From a social side, you don't want your kid in a class with kids below the non-honors level. In HS, the best bet is AP classes or some DE. I sub in public schools, the difference between the class levels is astonishing. Behavior, attitude, desire to achieve, goals. . . The teachers can barely control the class let alone provide opportunities to grow. Not blaming the kids but it is what it is. |
the 0.5 bump only applies to honors HS classes and the only honors HS classes in middle school are Algebra 1 Honors and Geometry Honors. So if you kid takes civics honors in 8th, for example, the grade doesn't even count and no one cares. But if they take Algebra 1 Honors and/or Geometry Honors in middle school the grade counts in GPA, shows up on the kids transcript, and the 0.5 is awarded. |
. It is for any classes that are considered high school classes. In MS, basically that’s just algebra and Spanish/German/Chinese etc. |
