And can you recommend? I'd like to get a reasonably priced one that helps document any incidents or traffic stops that may go awry.
Thanks. |

I’ve been using one made by “VanTrue) for the last 3 years and it’s been fantastic. It has front and rear cameras, records to a micro SD card, and loops recording unless you save the event by hitting a button.
The one I have is dated now, but it’s still pretty good in terms of how well it “sees”, especially at night. I got it off Amazon, it was like $180 for the dual camera system. Single cam is like $130ish. There are much more expensive ones out there, but this one has been good enough. It paid for itself about 6 months after I installed it because a rake flew off the back of a landscaping truck and dented my hood and cracked my windshield. I called the landscaper on the number on the side of the truck, and they said “we’re not responsible for windshield damage (didn’t say anything about the dented hood)” and then implied I was lying by the saying “you could’ve got that anywhere- you can’t prove our truck did that”. So I called Maryland State Police, and they sent a trooper out to get a report. She watched the video, and the next day the landscaper called me wanting to settle up right then. I said I wanted you to make good on this when I called you, and you basically called me a liar. So I told him “it’s out of my hands now, the police are involved”. I guess they wanted no record of it showing up for insurance reasons? Too late. You had the chance, you blew it. Anyway, it sorta paid for itself right there, since GEICO nowhad someone to pursue for damages. So yeah, they’re useful things to have. |

We do. A few years back we had a minor fender bender. Our car was standing still, about to put in reverse gear to perform a parallel parking. A limousine bumped into us from behind. As our car was private, none our 3 passengers were considered "impartial third party witness", while the limousine, because it was commercial vehicle, were allowed its passengers to be considered "impartial third party witness", so the blame was put on us for backing into the limousine (remember, car was not yet in reverse gear, we were about to reverse), and our insurance had to pay.
After that, we put a dash cam, front and back. |
