How to understand cheap materials?

Hi,

I see in this forum lots of people commenting that houses are built/renovated with builder grade material? How can you tell that from a picture? I understand that it takes an educated eye but if there are easy red flags, please tell me!

Yes, why do people do this? It can't be that much of a savings.

If the window frames are flush with the outside of the house, it's a cheap build and run away.

I have expensive custom inset cabinets that do not go to the ceiling. The ceilings are too high and it would look weird to have a huge piece of moulding on top (I even have 48 in cabinets).

Builder grade is better than owner/handyman work.

Same with ours. Plus, our oven hood is custom made and goes to the ceiling, the cabinets being lower is part of the design.
