Tell me about the lunch program at the Upper School at your school

We love most everything about our daughter's school and while it seems like a petty thing to get hung up on, the lunch isn't very good and neither one of us is a fan of packing lunch. It's the same caterer they had in MS, but the lunch options are much more "sophisticated" in the US and not as appealing to our daughter. In addition, there are not a lot of choices. I acknowledge my child is picky, but when she was in MS there was maybe 1 lunch a week she didn't care for. This year, there may be 1 lunch she would eat per week. You cannot purchase by the day, so we canceled our lunch contract.

She isn't the only one who feels this way. There has been a lot of grumbling with all her friends around lunch.

What is the lunch program like at your upper school? I would love to get an idea of what is out there, so that I could go back to our administration with some thoughts/suggestions.

Salad bar, sandwhich bar and several "hot" offerings each day' vegetarian and gluten free options as well, daily.

Many schools lunches have had various supply issues. Most likely things will be easier next year. It really is not something to get hung up on. Think about lunches from 30 years back. My kids always find something.

Sometimes kids just like to complain.

My DC's school offers hot bar options (rotating, some good, some bad), a selection of prepared salads, a full salad bar, a sandwich bar, and PB&J, sunbutter, and jelly. She always finds something to eat. Besides, she doesn't want to hear me go off yet again on the slop they served at my school thirty years ago.

… Yay lunch. Sigh.

I have teenage boy athletes. Their names are Hoover and Dyson.

They're happy with the food at Landon, but I think that comes down to the fact that the portions are unlimited. Maybe the food is also delicious, but they aren't the best judges of that.

Can you talk to the school about giving her a MS lunch
instead?

It’s not that. For example the main (non vegetarian) entree on Monday was meatballs with ziti, pesto, and goat cheese. Why not just have plain pasta and then meatballs and sauce and plain sauce for the vegetarians? It’s too fancy.

SSSAS. The lunches were great in 5th and 6th grade. No lunch in 8th because of Covid.

Because the other parents want their kids to develop a mildly sophisticated palate...and the upper school is more expensive

Lol. Too fancy? I truly don’t understand people who complain about amenities they are not forced to purchase.

Also, vegetarians get tired of pasta and sauce. Kudos to your daughter’s school for offering a variety.

OP, we also aren’t a fan of our school’s lunch program but you gotta admit this is a hilarious thread in the context of impending climate catastrophe, WWIII, end of democracy, etc…

You're not a fan of packing lunch and not a fan of the lunch options. If your kid is that picky you need to pack a lunch.
