Hi, in this area, what is the typical gift (cash) amount for bar and bat mitzvahs? $100? $200? |
Traditionally monetary bar/bat mitzvah gifts are in multiples of 18. The amount IMO depends on how much you're comfortable giving--are you wealthy? Are you close to the family?
The last one we went to a few years ago I think we gave $108. It was for the son of one of my college friends who live a few hours away (and had their son very young!). I love them dearly but only see or talk to them once or twice a year; their kid doesn't know me from Adam. So that's what we decided to give. If it was this year I might give a bit more as we're in a better financial situation now. |
I think this also depends if you/your spouse are the guests or your child. For adults I'd give at least $75 per adult... could do less for a 13 yr old |
Multiples of $18 are standard in Jewish giving, because the number 18 represents life (there is a weird system of alphabet math involved in this, just go with it). For a bar mitzvah, I would give at least $72. |
