5 Covid cases in 2 days

Anonymous
My DS’ high school announced 5 Covid cases in the past two days alone - 4 yesterday and 1 on Monday. DS says almost no one is wearing a mask anymore. I’m wondering if anyone else is seeing numbers like this? Concerned?

Those are not concerning numbers. That’s 2-3 families out of 2000 kids? You I need to look at the trends over a week/2 week period Versus two days.

The flu numbers are higher I bet.

Go back to bed OP. If you’re “concerned “ about this, it’s going to be a long day.

Yes, I have been following trends and this represents an uptick. And no one is wearing masks anymore. Which is why I’m concerned.

Average HS in FCPS is about 2300 kids now, not 2000, so the incidence rate is even lower.

Haha, my child's FCPS elementary school had a total of 23 cases last week; they are up to 12 cases so far this week. Coincidence this outbreak coincides with lifting the mask mandate?

BA.2 is more contagious, and omicron doesn’t provide immunity from the new strain. It will not be surprising when those who got omicron get infected again. We are sticking with masks in our family until we see how this plays out.

Maybe, maybe not. We haven’t had any reported cases since February. My ES class hasn’t had any yet this school year.

OP here and I agree with you, we are doing the same. But masking tends to be way less effective when it’s unidirectional. Of course it is better than nothing. I’m glad spring break is coming which may slow the spread of this some in the schools?

I don’t mean to be Debbie downer, but I know many many families who are only keeping the mask on until spring break so they don’t have to ruin their trip. These families that are masking in schools are ready to rip them off after their spring break trips. yes, a good fitting mask is better than no mask at all, so do what you need to do for your family. It’s tough to know the right thing to do.

It is tough to know. And as parents, we have zero backup in the schools. I beg my kid to mask each day but who knows if he actually is. I wonder who these families are who are still cautious enough to be masking in schools but ready to rip it off for spring break?

I recommend double-checking the science. Your child will be protected if she wears an N95 or similar mask, irrespective of others’ mask preferences.

Me. We have to test before we get to our destination, so that’s what we’re trying not to risk- a positive result that would cancel our trip. We can’t risk an asymptomatic infection that we wouldn’t even have known about if we weren’t testing.

I’m not concerned. I do see it as an uptick. One kid has both shots, the other also has a booster. One wears a surgical mask, the other a kf94.

If they get it, odds are high it will be a mild case.

We will, however, stop visiting family 50+ if cases continue to rise.

I don’t think spring break will slow the trend. Travel is way up, people will just be bringing mild or asymp cases back to o school with them.
