Dumb school nicknames, nonsensical acronyms, and confusion

Anonymous
What is the deal with the dumb nicknames for some schools? Is it really that difficult to just write out Vanderbilt? What's the deal with Mizzou? For the longest time I didn't know what UVM was and finally Googled it. “UVM” stands for the Latin words Universitas Viridis Montis -- University of the Green Mountains. Not very intuitive. And as far as I'm concerned, USC is the obnoxious private school in Los Angeles, not a Southern school.

Yeah, I agree. My kid was upset that someone mistook us University of Southern California shirt for South Carolina. Oh well!

Miami of Ohio

California University of Pennsylvania

Indiana University of Pennsylvania

And good for the Missouri directional schools - finally changed all or some of the NE/SW/SE MO State Universities to Truman State University, for example.

Ah yes the acclaimed school that’s younger than I am and has a 12% graduation rate. How could I forget that! How very silly of me.

Miami Indians were in Ohio. It makes sense. No Miami Indians in Florida. Those were the Mayaimi native Americans.

Midwestern universities that are all like: U of I, or I U , or I of U, or Iowa I, or Uawa I. I have no clue. Random combinations of Is and Us and other vowels . And then the Northern and Southern and Western and Eastern U of Is and Is of Us.

Yeah this one's pretty straightforward. Interesting to see the Latin lines up, though!
