Why choose ED2 vs ED1?

Anonymous
I’m confused as to why someone would apply ED 2. Can someone explain why their kid did it or what the benefit was? For example, BC offers ED1 with the deadline of Nov 1 and then the ED2 deadline is Jan 1. Both are binding. What’s the point of waiting? If you love BC enough to apply Jan 1 and make it your binding choice on Jan 1, wouldn’t you have known that on Nov 1? What am I missing here? Thank you.

ED 2 is generally for a 2nd choice, or if the kid wasn’t sure until then.

Because kid was rejected from their first choice ED1 school.

How is this hard to understand?

Plus kids who couldn’t get their applications out by Ed1 deadline. Or weren’t ready to commit to one school by ED1.

Sometimes kids can't wrap their heads around the reality that their dream school is out of reach.

My kid applied ED2 after getting rejected from ED1 choice.

Right. They know that not every kid will make up their mind and be willing to commit by November. Also the schools with ED2 know that they are unlikely to win over Brown, say, for first choice, and are happy to provide another option to the many kids who aren’t admitted ED to Brown but are eager to be done with the admissions process.

Schools LOVE locking in kids early, so ED2 gives them another chance to do that.

Because the ED1 deadline passed before he was ready to commit so ED2 it was.

BC does ED II after Georgetown and a few higher ranker competitor schools release EA results. So if a kid is WL at Georgetown like mine was, BC swoops in and goes, are we now your top choice? If so, ED II. It is a gauge for interest and helps them with yield. If it’s you top choice all along then do ED I but a lot of kids treat BC as a second tier option.
