Help with writing lower ES

My son is in 1st grade and his teacher said he is a behind in writing. She just said to have him write at home, that does not work. No other help. My son cries at home when try do writing. Has good penmanship but doesn’t know how to write with full sentences and correct punctuation. He still flips his p and q & b and d. He hasn’t improved much all year. Not sure how to help. Any resources or guides to help him improve his writing?

Are there places that offer classes a couple days a week to prepare kids for 2nd grade or just do some writing work. Any advice is appreciated.

Get a private tutor. Works wonders.

Try doing it at a different time. My DS struggled with writing in first. The limited homework, read a short book, draw a picture, and write one sentence describing your picture) was torture. The reading and drawing took 10 minutes, the books were really short. The writing took 30-45 minutes and lots of tears. We moved the writing bit to the morning, after breakfast, and he was done in 5-10 minutes with little to no fuss. The writing was harder for him then anything else in school. He was tired when he got home from school. Doing the parts that were easy for him, like reading, took little emotional effort. the writing was a struggle and more emotionally challenging. A full day of school and he was too tired for it. Wide awake in the morning and fed and he was fine.

We passed this information on to his Teacher and she recommended he be placed in a classroom that did LA in the morning (this is an option at his school I guess) and the writing issue at school got easier. He is in fourth now and writing seems to be less of an issue. You can see how much better he has gotten at it and he can do homework without any issues. Writing doesn't take any extra time.

His Teacher also recommended getting him play duh or modelling clay to play with, to build up his hand and finger muscles, and to trace letters in a sand box or box of salt. There is a tactile element that helps them with letter formation?

Agree with the idea of a private tutor. I hired one for my 2nd grader who was below grade level in reading and after she got caught up they started focusing on writing. It's helped tremendously.
