What information do individual schools have about lottery applications?

Anonymous
Shortly after submitting my lottery application (but before the deadline to re-rank schools), I got a call from one of the charter schools I had ranked (near the bottom of my list), noting my application and offering a tour of the school.

I'm curious: when do schools learn who ranked the school? Do they know where I ranked them? Was the goal of the reach-out to get me to re-rank the school higher?

(Also: I was quite surprised when I attended the virtual DC school fair and ended up on the email lists for every school I had clicked on at the fair.)

I think they get a weekly summary which shows how many have applied and how many have ranked the school in their top 3 choices (which I guess is a proxy for likelihood of attending if matched). I didn't realize they got your contact info.

They are likely trying to assess your interest and get you to accept if you match.

Is it true that your enrolled school knows if you’re playing the lottery (I.e., considering leaving)?

If so that’s pretty lousy, as it could leave school administrators with the feeling that your family is not totally invested in staying.

They know and and it does lack or investment. Also, administrators have eyes on local forums (Facebook groups, etc.) and they watch your school inquiries and “crossing fingers for a a good number.” School choice is school choice. But it doesn’t go unnoticed.

Oops. I’m one cocktail in OP. It “does show lack of investment.”

It does, but I think at most schools administrators are realistic about it. Maybe not at schools that are newly troubled and the leadership is in denial.

Very curious what SSMA's stats look like at this point in the process, for example.

Well of course they're going to say that. But they do-- especially if you are in PTO leadership or your child scores 5s/is obviously bright.

Totally agree here.

Or if you are a pain or your child is violent, they definitely care.

Wow. I had no idea. That seems odd. Ideally your school wouldn't know if they were your top or bottom choice, if you end up there.

I knew that charters learned how many kids from their school entered the lottery each year. I thought they didn't know who.

I had no idea the current school knows if you play the lottery. That is terrible! Why do they do it that way?

I'm not sure they do know that, by name of student. I saw the reports a few years ago at our DCPS.

So the school can tell if it's going to lose a lot of kids.
