Tummy/Belly Fat, What’s realistic?

Anonymous
Late 30s/ early 40s women who consider themselves fit, please be honest: do you have a noticeable tummy bump? Or are you able to keep a flat stomach?

I am at the very low end of weight for my height (BMI of 18) but I still have a belly that’s noticeable in sheath dresses. And bikinis are out of the question. I can’t lose more weight, and I learned here that you can’t spot tone, so is there nothing I can do?

I had a flatter stomach when I was younger, but it seems impossible to get back now. Is this normal?

Flat stomach. You can definitely spot tone, you can't spot reduce. Watch any physical therapy. Extra strength gas-x. Jump rope for boxer abs. Erging for tiny abs.

You could always try Emmons.

Is it lose skin or actual fat? If fat, lipo works too.

43, workout just about every day. Yes, a gentle curve starts under my navel and ends at my c section scar. It’s part loose skin, part fat. Above my navel I have visible abs. The curve honestly doesn’t bother me, but if it did I could probably go for a tummy tuck.

The answers you're getting indicate that it is, indeed, normal for human women to have tummies, even underweight ones like yourself.

I do, I like it though, I think it looks feminine. And, I’ve had 3 babies, so it’s also just part of my story now.

When she was in her late 80s and 90s, my grandmother was often distressed that she did not have a flat stomach. She still went to the YMCA almost daily to walk or do an exercise class until a year or so before she died. I think she loved it, gave her something to do, she had lots of friends there. One time an older gentleman asked her out on a date and she was scandalized.

But what she focused on was her tummy. It was big, she didn’t like how it looked in her clothes, it wasn’t attractive. She didn’t appreciate all the things that her body could still do at that age, she just saw a fat, not flat stomach.

I’m 45 and I wish I had a flat stomach too. But my stomach has never been flat. In my 20s, when I was competing in triathlons and doing 2-4 hours of cardio a day I had visible abs above my belly button and a belly bump below. I wasn’t made to have a flat stomach. And my daughter has never once heard me mention it and I am trying my hardest to make sure she only hears me say positive things about how my body looks and works. Something has to counteract the way she is being bombarded with the idea that there is a narrow definition of an attractive body that is attainable for everyone.

Did you have babies? Your abdominal wall can actually separate and cause a pooch. Can be corrected by surgery. Has nothing to do with weight. Strengthening your core can also help. I’m BMI of 17-18 and still have a little loose skin that I can control with Spanx.

I'm 49 with a flat stomach and normal BMI (between 19 and 20). Had two kids in my 20s, but didn't end up with a tummy. It's the last place I gain and first place I lose. Just the randomness of genetics.

My thighs are not so great. Everyone has parts they would like to change.
