flavor of toothpaste and kind of toothbrush

Anonymous
My 3 year old is not brushing her teeth. I have tried different flavor, from apple, berries, bubble gum or get her favorite character, none works for toothpaste flavors. For toothbrush, I have tried many ones, and she complains that it hurts.

Any suggestions?

Do you mean you’re not brushing your 3 year olds teeth?

Try the dr tanners vanilla flavor my kid loves that. And make sure you use a soft kid’s brush. But she has to do it (well she has to let you). Nothing happens until teeth are brushed, no stories or books or whatever she likes

Is she not doing it on her own or she's protesting getting her teeth brushed? I don't know if changing the toothbrush or the paste will help if it's a resistance issue, that seems more like boundary setting issue. Maybe try one of those ones that goes on your finger? Maybe schedule a dentist appointment to make sure there's not something going on that is actually hurting?

Does she have older cousins? My niece came over last month and brushed her teeth while she was here and now it is like I have a new 3 year old. I had to buy her the same toothbrush (a vibrating one from Amazon with a unicorn in it) and toothpaste (hello unicorn sparkle) but it’s sooo easy now.

Our young kids get to watch a video (on our phones) of something they like while they brush (think a three minute video clip on Youtube from a favorite movie or a song). If they're refusing to brush, the song stops. They don't get a ton of screen-time otherwise because they're so young (none on the weekdays, limited on weekends). They generally love brushing their teeth!

I found brushing my teeth with my kid worked. She uses the tooth brush from the dentist, and basic Crest toothpaste.
