| Just started it. Pretty middle of the road sitcom although I’m sure there are a ton of cultural references and jokes I’m missing. It is fascinating to see Kyiv so nicely filmed and the lighter side of Zelenskyy. The fact that he did become president makes it all fascinating and the fact that these people we see huddled on the news were just weeks ago living lives very much like ours. It is also fascinating how comedy isn’t all that different in such a different culture. I recommend checking it out. |
| oooh I'll watch it! I'm sure I'll feel equal parts sad and impressed. |
| Maybe I’ll watch it when the war is over. Doesn’t it feel a little odd to be laughing at him right now? |
| It's interesting which TV star in Ukraine became president compared to which TV star in the US became president. We lost that contest. |
I think it's a way to recognize and support Ukraine. The more views this sitcom gets on Netflix, the more profit goes into the original Ukrainian producers' pockets. At least I think how the deal works with Netflix. |
| I started to watch it but could only take it for a few minutes. The city is so beautiful, it just hurt too much to see it, knowing what all those beautiful cities are like now. |
8:45 here. That's a good point. I'm not sure it does work like that, but I do know that Netflix hasn't licensed it in other countries. (Saw someone on Twitter say that they didn't have it on Netflix in Austria, for example.) So if it does prove popular among the U.S. audience, Netflix might be more likely to pay to license it in other regions/countries as well. I for Korean dramas, for instance, Netflix doesn't have the same licensing agreements in every country. |
Regardless I’m gonna watch every episode. Frankly I’d be interested in more storytelling from Ukraine. |
Can confirm that Kyiv is (was) indeed that beautiful, and that "European" in terms of people bicycling, hanging out at parks, etc. |
| It's in Russian, not Ukrainian, right, and not dubbed? I'll watch it if I can listen to the original audio. |
Yup — I spent a few days there in 2008 with some friends. It was a lovely city with extremely kind, hospitable people. |
Yeah, it’s in Russian with English subtitles. |
|
About to start watching it now but can't because I think I'll just start crying. So my Netflix tab is open with "Servant of the People" up, and I can't bring myself to click Play because I will start crying.
Anyone else feeling like this? |
| I'm sure I would start crying, too. |
