I miss Anthony Bourdain

Tonight I was cooking a steak and following advice I learned from him on how to do so properly. It still grieves me that he's gone.

Yeah, me too.

What’s the advice?

That's probably the hardest a celebrity suicide has hit for me. Then Chris Cornell.

Me too.

I miss him too - his suicide hit me harder than any other celebrity death.

I got a CNN+ Twitter ad today and there was a picture of him in it. It hit me too today, how much I miss him.

I have mixed feelings about Bourdain. I enjoyed Parts Unknown - the political/cultural discussions were really good. No Reservations on the other hand... oof. He vacillated between blind reverence (Japan) to downright arrogance and contempt (Iceland and Crete). I DESPISED Kitchen Confidential. I come from a restaurant family and know many people in the business. He portrayed a whole industry as being comprised of 2 types of people: 1) Drug-addled social reject f-ups who think they are hot stuff because they can chop an onion and 2) Earnest Mexicans. I'm here to tell you that while there may be a subset of restaurants that have that sort of kitchen culture, the vast majority of restaurant owners and employees are humble, incredibly hard-working family people who wouldn't tolerate Bordain's style of "kitchen pirate" for a single shift. His contempt of vegetarians was also bizarre.

Same, but with the addition of Kate Spade in such close proximity. Not so much because I was so into Kate Spade, but because they were two people who had seemingly achieved major success, and left behind young kids.

I realize it happens every day, but those two really illustrated the viciousness of depression for me.

OP here. Just the simple stuff. Like, let the meat rest after cooking. My parents were terrible, terrible cooks so I had a lot to learn.

I am also not a stan of Bourdain. His contempt of vegetarians is typical of guys trying to act macho and deride vegetarian men as somehow less masculine. Evidently, his mental health issues and/or emotional insecurities were not treated which led to his tragic passing. And to poster who is trying to blame this on Asia Argento should be ashamed of themselves. Regardless of what she did or didn't do, only one person made the decision to end Bourdain's life. Yet another example of the patriarchy blaming women for men's poor decisions.

Loved his book "Typhoid Mary: An Urban Historical". She was a chef!

I recently listened to "Bourdain: The Definitive Oral Biography" and really enjoyed it.

I feel like we can honor him by keeping his memory alive.

Often he discovered unique and cool food, but I could do without his try-hard commentary -- especially when you see his background is a privileged media-connected rich kid who went to private schools his whole life. Not the gritty self-made druggy shtick he portrayed himself to be. Phony rich kid poseur.

"Suicide."

I still maintain his friend did him a final solid after discovering Bourdain's Carradine impression.
