Transferring car from DC to MD

I’m not understanding from the MVA website…do we have to pay 6% tax on all vehicles transferred from DC to MD when we move?

Yes, and you need to get them inspected.

It was really confusing. We had a leased car and they told me I would have to pay sales tax on it. I didn't think that was correct .. so I kept my DC plates for a year and half til we turned the lease in. Bought a car in Maryland. Problem solved.

The answer is no. I've done this with two vehicles. One that we owned and had the title for when I moved to Maryland and one that we had a loan on.

The one that we had the title to was straightforward. The other one was a PITA.

Since you paid 6% sales tax in DC, you do not have to pay sales tax in MD but there is still a minimum fee, I can't recall what it is. $100 or something per car? You have to register the car within 60 days of moving to the state or they charge the entire 6% though. They figure this out on your driver's license issue date. They also ask you when you register the vehcile "When did you move to the state" and if it was more than 60 days ago, they're going to charge you 6%. If it's less than 60 days and your driver's license was switched over less than 60 days ago then you only get charged the minimal fee. Berlow is a site that discusses it though it doesn't specify the 60 day limit, just trust me, that's a thing. The only difficult part is if you're paying on a loan. Then, as I mentioned, it's a pain in the butt. I was able to get it done within 60 days though.

Maryland grants a credit for sales tax paid to another state up to the amount of Maryland's six (6%) percent sales and use tax liability.

For example, if you paid a four (4%) percent sales tax to another state, you would be liable only for the difference, or two (2%) percent Maryland sales and use tax when you brought the property into Maryland. If you paid a six (6) or higher percent sales tax to another state, you would not be liable for Maryland sales and use tax when you brought the property into Maryland.
