Reading level in kindergarten

Report cards are back and our child was assessed at reading level 6 . What does that mean?

If it refers to DRA 6, that'd be right about where I'd want to see a child now in March. I like to see my kindergarten students at a level equivalent to DRA 8 by year's end. However, there are so many factors to consider. Not every single kid will get to 8 by the end of the year and that's okay. As long as they are progressing and enjoying reading, as long as they have a good phonics grasp, many sight words, and strong comprehension, they should be fine. In other words, your child is right on track.
