Disappointed

Anonymous
We moved here for the excellent public schools and I now find myself in the position of sending my DC to $40k/year Kindergarten. Several people we know were gung ho about public and then Covid hit, and they’ve lost complete faith in the school system’s ability to put kids first and focus on what’s high priority. Basically everyone I know who had the foresight and the money switched to private and they’re not coming back. I know, don’t let the door hit us on the way out. But I’m disappointed because I would have loved to send public but no longer feel it’s a great option.

What sort of response are you looking for from DCUM? Or are you just venting?

Your loss. We have enjoyed FCPS. DL was awful but we managed and DS is fine because we choose to add enrichment activities that kept him on pace.

I’m SO sick of all this complaining. Specifically, WHAT are you criticizing? In what specific, tangible way do you think your child was underserved?

I mean, it’s not a surprise that you get more attention at a $40k kindergarten. You can afford a $40k kindergarten. The owe-pupil expenditure in FCPS is nothing close to that, and the average PPE is skewed by the extremely ro naive Special Education cases, so spending on an average kid is considerably lower than the average.

If you want all FVPS students to get $40k/year service, I highly recommend you starting a political movement to drastically improve funding for our public schools.

When it comes to achievement vs. per pupil spending, Virginia’s schools are extraordinarily effective given their extremely low funding, relative to states with similarly successful public schools.

If you are paying $40k for private kindergarten...

(1) That is way, way too high for kindergarten

And

(2) when did you have any experience with FCPS to conclude that it is so disappointing? Your kid is already in private for kindergarten ...there couldn't have been any public schooling before that.

No one cares.

FCPS is super disappointing. Sorry you didn’t realize it before you moved here. They are a marketing machine and have skated by on a old reputation.

I would like to see OP answer this.

It sounds like she just wants to keep up with the neighbors.

I guess I’m just venting. Sorry. I mean, I’m excited about my DC’s school. But I would have much, much preferred to stick to the neighborhood school. It’s not the school itself, or the teachers, that are the problem. It’s the people at the top making the decisions.

OP: Which elementary school are you zoned for?

I don’t understand the people who say the school systems don’t put kids first. I mean, it was a pandemic, people made the best decisions they could. I seriously don’t think people get into the oh-so-lucrative education industry just so they can screw over kids.

I don’t think anyone could have paid any attention to the actions of Brabrand and the School Board over the past two years and not realized they are a bunch of partisan, incompetent hacks. And sadly it’s the liars and hypocrites on the School Board who’ll pick the next superintendent. Heaven help us.

You have not provided any specifics. Sounds very likely that you are throwing the 40k down the drain based on rumors and all the astroturfing from anti-public education here on DCUM rather than any actual deficiency of your neighborhood school. What a dupe.

OMG—not another whiny thread. This is beyond pathetic.

Nothing quite screams FCDC tool quite like the automatic claim that any criticism of FCPS is “astroturfing.”
