| Our rising 9th grader was accepted to DJO and we are seriously considering it for him as it seems like a great fit. We can get him there every morning because it's on my way to work, but am looking to understand how to get him home. Transportation seems to be limited to VA and MD. Does anyone have any experience/insights into how kids from DC (we are in AU park) get home from DJO? |
| It’s a reasonable walk - a little over half a mile - from DJO to East Falls Church Metro, if that would work. I don’t know if there may be other options; just happen to live in the area. |
| The Orange Line doesn't go into NW DC. Anyone heard of a carpool from AU Park or other places? Seems hard to find information on DJO on this forum. Is there a reason for that? |

They release info for carpools if you opt into it; of course that’s after you’ve already committed to go. It was during the late summer. I would just call admissions and see if they’d be willing to generally share if there are families from your zip code attending and if they know how they get to/from school. They’re very nice.
My kid takes the VA bus morning and afternoon. Make sure you go in eyes wide open on the logistics. If your kid plays a sport or has a consistent after school activity, you will have to find a way to get them after school, even if you find a carpool for the typical days. Dealing with that for a spring sport right now, and DS has be picked up at 5pm. If we can’t get there (we both work and have other kids who also have lives), he metros into DC to DH’s office and then rides home with him. It’s a lot, but he’s happy. |
This is very helpful, thank you so much! |
| I had to look this up and I have lived in this area my whole life except for undergrad. Do people really say DJO now? Or is that just short form typing? |
I was trying to look this up and failed. I used to live near the EFC metro. What is DJO? |
O’Connell |
Thx. |
| I went to O’Connell in the last millennium. We called it many things 😀, including DJO. |
| For the uninitiated, the full name of the school is "Bishop Denis J. O'Connell High School." |
| We are in Upper NW (AU Park/palisades/Spring valley) at a K-8 and also wanted to look at the school but the commute is a deterrent. I think a lot of families' would look if they had some type of shuttle from NW. |
OP here... I called the woman who started an independent transportation option from DJO to VA and Maryland. She doesn't come to DC. I wish someone would!! |
| Why not take metro? My kid goes the other way, from Arlington to Metro Center to the red line and it's no problem. |
Because then he'd need to walk to Falls Church Metro, take the Orange line to Metro Center, then change at Metro Center, then somehow get home from the Metro stop. We aren't walking distance from a metro stop. It would take forever to get home. |
