| My son recently switched FCPS high schools. His new school says they are doing PBAs instead of the SOL. The problem is that his old school was doing the SOL so they are asking my son to come in on Saturdays for a couple weeks to do the PBAs with the kids who failed it. We do a travel sport and really can't miss multiple weekends. Why are different schools doing different things. This seems like it is unfair to kids switching schools mid year. They won't let my son take the SOL because his new school is not an "SOL school". |
| OP here. I would have my son do these PBAs at home but we are being told they can't be done at home and it has to be at school in a "test like" setting. |
Is this a history class? Some SOLs were replaced with PBAs year ago, when they removed the SOL. |
OP here. Yes this is a high school history class. Apparently some schools in the county opted to do PBAs instead of the SOL. His previous school opted to do the SOL. I guess for history it is a school by school decision if they want to do the SOL or not. It seems like this should be a county decision, not a school by school decision. |
Not all the courses have SOLs, so they do the PBA. The schools aren’t opting out of SOLs. Plus, some parents can based on the need for required credits. I don’t think you have all the info. |
It sounds like your son is in danger of failing. Why else would he be invited to do this on weekends? Maybe you should be concerned more with his academics than with his travel sport? |
This is an honors World history 2 class and my son has an A. I was simply told his last school opted to do the SOL and his new school opted to do PBAs for verified credit. His new school already has done the two PBAs so my son needs to make them up if he wants verified credit. The first PBA will be made up the first two Saturdays in May, and the second PBA will be made up the next two Saturdays in May. That's 4 Saturdays my son has to attend in order to get the verified credit for World History 2. |
It sounds like the assessment was done before the kid changed schools. They are offering to have him come in on weekends with the kids who already failed the PBA. I would tell them that he cannot come in on weekends because he has other commitments. The school owes you a different solution. |
| Yeah, no. They can make him do the assessment, but they can't make him come in on Saturday. That's wild. |
| I don't understand why your son is taking this PBA/SOL at all. You are only required to take and pass one SOL for social studies. Did he not take and pass his World History SOL in 9th grade? That's all he needs. |
PP here...to be more clear...you said his previous school did SOLs so he would have taken the 9th grade World History SOL when he was there and shouldn't need to catch up on anything. |
|
There are other ways to get verified credits besides SOLs. Seems like the SOL at the old school should be accepted by the new school. Maybe this link could help you? Maybe call the VA Dept of Edication? Something doesn’t seem right

He wouldn't have taken the SOL yet. He changed schools mid year. SOLs are taking in April or May. Apparently the PBAs can be done earlier in the year. The school knows which kids failed the PBA and have to make them up on the weekend since they screwed up the initial assessment. |
I mean, sorry, but that’s life. School comes first. SATs are also taken on a weekend. He’s in high school. You have to put more time into academics vs sports. |
| Does he need the verified credit? He'll still get standard credit based on his grade |
