Alaska cruise with kids

Anonymous
I'm thinking about an Alaskan cruise for the summer. One kid isn't a great traveler or eater, so a cruise makes it much easier - I'm not asking for opinions on cruises in general.

Is there a port that best to leave from? Can/should we do a couple of days in Anchorage first? There seem to be a couple of different itineraries - best choice to not miss anything big? Any other tips? Definitely a room with a balcony.

Vancouver is a great city to explore for a few days, and the embarkation/debarkation point for many.

If for this summer, book asap. To/from Seattle is probably easiest logistically with flights.

We did Princess from Anchorage. Flew from DC to Seattle, then Seattle to Anchorage. One week on or own, rented a car and did Seward, Talkeetna and Denali, then back to Anchorage where we got on the cruise ship. I wasn't wiling to fly with 2 kids (11 and 14) all the way to Alaska for one week on a ship. Ship stopped in Juneau, Ketchikan, Skagway, Glacier Bay and Victoria, BC then back to Anchorage.

The only thing you want to make sure is that you're doing the inside passage (esp if any in your party are prone to sea sickness)

Would highly recommend Disney cruise with kids, especially picky eaters. They really cater to whatever your kids will need. We have done Alaska twice with Disney and absolutely loved it.

The cruises all have to stop in Canada to avoid the Jones Act. I think the best route is from Vancouver (one way or RT) but it’s slightly more of a pain to get to than Seattle (but the worst sea days for us were Seattle to the inside passage).

Have you done any non Disney cruises? I've never found picky eating to be a problem - tons of plain cut fruit and salad veggies, burgers and hot dogs, plain pasta, pizza, you can order anything without the sauce....

We did our Alaska cruise out of Seattle. It was our first trip to Seattle and we spent a few days pre and post cruise. We went to the Museum of Pop Culture which my 11 yo DS lived. We also visited the Space Needle and went to several parks/playgrounds. We took a day trip to ride the Snoqualmie Valley Railroad and visit the falls. We had a blast both on the cruise and in Seattle.

Have fun!!!
