| We need permit drawings done for a basement reno. We know the layout we want and it does include lengthening a window to be an egress windows, moving the laundry space, installing new lights, outlets, and radiator. We’re planning to DIY most of the work except the window, electrical and plumbing, but we are finding any architects fees to do the drawings seem very high (15-20%) considering our estimated costs (we’ve gotten estimates from everyone we want to use). Is there another type of professional we should be looking for who can do these drawings for us so we can get the permit? If so, any recommendations? Thanks! |

I don’t know the requirements for your situation, but when I applied for a permit for a backyard remodeling, I did the drawing myself. It was very basic. You just had to display the various components (eg fence, patio) of the backyard with their dimensions. I am not sure if that would work for you.
I know that when there is electrical or plumbing work involved, only specialized contractors can apply, but maybe you can separate out the various permits. |
| I’m not sure how to do the electrical or plumbing parts of it all for just the building permit, which from my understanding are needed for the licensed electrician/plumber to then submit their own permit. |
| If you have time, call or visit the DCRA Homeowner Center. There is a gentleman working there who is very responsive and available, unlike most other DC employees I had experience with. I don’t recall his name. |
